Mechanical / Engine using water
October 23, 2018, 11:09:14 PM
Having got the bike back from catalunya I firstly noticed the sticking starter motor,
But when I have started to take it apart noticed all the water gone from the expansion bottle.
No visible leaks around the rad or engine yet, no milky oil filler cap or in sight glass. Guess it could be leaking into a cylinder and burning off.

What's next to check? Colour of plugs? Maybe a pressure test? Any other suggestions?

Mechanical / B1 starter motor
September 29, 2018, 10:47:05 AM
Just got bike back from catalunya and while it was on the stillage it's developed a sticking starter motor. Not even looked at it... anyone changed one before? Or any experience of issues with them?

Cheers all

Mechanical / Clutch plates
November 10, 2015, 11:25:03 PM
I'm considering a sigma slipper clutch for the b1, recommendation is to go with a new set of OEM plates.

Ebc seems to show up a lot, are the OEM ones significantly better than the likes of ebc?
Anyone got any experience with a sigma?

Bike Talk / Maintenance
October 30, 2015, 10:55:01 PM
So I have done 13 days on track this year, not a huge amount.
I think I maintain the bike well but the last day out in Aragon the brake master cyl came lose on my last session. My mate just checked over his zx6 and found sprocket carrier nuts and rearsets coming lose. Seems periodic maintenance may need to be reviewed.

Any racers or regular trackday riders got any advice on their bike maintenance ?

Bike Talk / Throttle cables

I have used venhill for the Ktm but they don't seem to make specific ones for the b1.
Any recommendations for a straight swap throttle cables for a b1?

Mechanical / B1 brakes (the bank)
June 01, 2015, 08:59:32 PM
So I changed from stock pads to brembo sc pads in the stock b1 calipers. A set is £107 and these days I'm getting 7 or 8 days from a set. They are awesome, but it's a bit pricey.

Are there any alternative pads that are as good as the brembo?
Or are there any callipers that are an easy swap that take 4 pads rather than 8!?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Mechanical / chain life expectancy
May 13, 2015, 02:53:43 PM
So only last year, March ish, I fitted a new tsubaki chain to the b1 and after approximately 12 track days there is already a noticeable tight spot. How long should a chain last!?

Mechanical / Brake dust seal question
January 10, 2015, 12:54:56 PM
Doing the brakes on the b1 and got a new set of seals for it
The new dust seal has a slight recess, should it go to the oil side or air side?

Shows two seals, front of one and back of the other to show the recess.

Suspension / Inside a shock
January 03, 2015, 06:24:12 PM
So this morning was spent stripping my mates WP shock, it's almost back together, just had a small bushing to arrive to go in the seal head, but everything is cleaned and ready. Will get it bled and gassed when I am up to do my forks next week. Here's a pic of the internals laid out for those interested to see the gubbins inside a shock.

Hypercoil spring on the LHS, to the right from top of the pic to the bottom is the rebound shim stack with piston and new piston bush at the bottom, to the right of that is the compression stack, to the right is the bumpstop, top-out spring, spring seat bearing, seal head... To the right of that is the shock body, pot of old oil, rod, new seals and old seals.

Mechanical / Oil viscosity
December 18, 2014, 06:21:20 PM
B1 manual says 10w40... I have accidentally picked up a 5w40... Is it close enough or should I go change it for the 10w40!?

Projects / Winter project(s)
December 08, 2014, 10:02:29 PM
So I have moved house and my garage has survived as a purely garage space. But I have lots to get done.

The van has died and it is laying in need of some serious work. Seems like engine bottom end or gearbox... This may end in a phone call to a scrap man. Have unbolted the sump guard but it's glued on there and it didn't want to part from the engine when I tried yesterday.

The wr250 is smoking and that's never a good sign, haven't even undone a bolt on it yet.

The vfr is still in bits.

The zx6 has just had it's callipers removed for a good strip and clean. So seems like that will be the first job. Then oil and filters, then fork service is planned for the new year with some changes to the internals. I think that lot will keep me busy for a while!

Misc For Sale / Free stuff
November 19, 2014, 07:05:34 PM
Moving home I found some stuff I have no need for.

Pair of Michelin pilot power supersport 2ct (fairly sure that's what they are!) will check next time I'm in the loft. Done a couple of trackdays while I was being über gay on the gsxr and there is loads of meat on them... I will throw in the chicken strips.  They are stamped about 4612 from memory. 180 rear 120 front.

There is also a 180 rear Michelin pilot road 2ct. It did about 2thousand road miles and is squaring in the middle a bit, but loads of tread on it. Bit older though, think it's a 2010 tyre.

A chain guard from a j1!

Let me know if you're interested or want more info
