Bike back together again after a slight talent/ambition mismatch at the end of May...

Then

Now

Both got off fairly lightly for a high side, quite spectacular according to the Marshall that came running over.
Bike was more or less stationary when it landed on its right side.

I just had a couple of bruises  and a small morel lavallee lesion on my right thigh - especially when compared to some that come up on a Google search

Managed to get a full set of original fairings at a good price, so didn't need to use the repaired top fairing and right hand fairing

Helmet a bit scuffed but rest of kit stood up to it well.

Still to fix the Blueflame exhaust, but will get there.

Or should it be Shamaha aRSed ... https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/news/2021/may/new-yamaha-r7-2022

Nice enough looking bike, but not sure it's worthy of the name - was surprised to see the headline but oh, dear  :(

Bike Talk / PB ZX6R J2 Suspension guide?
May 17, 2021, 03:02:23 PM
Does anyone have the link to the aforementioned Performance Bikes suspension setups for the 2001(ish) 6R?

Used this as a base setting for my first one and got on pretty will with it but the only think I can remember is jacking the back up by 8mm. Have played about with the settings but would be interesting to see what they had.

After having had enough of commuting on the YBR and wanting a bigger bike/needing to clear space in the garage; the black z1000 and YBR have been replaced by this:

2001 J2 with just under 25K on the clock, other than the wheels and a slight scuff on the fairing, it seems in pretty good order; itching to get out on it now, might just be finishing work early...then it'll be oil/filter change, check air filter and fit exhaust

Bike Talk / New (to me) Z1000SX ABS
May 11, 2020, 08:54:28 PM
Despite being in lockdown, I've got myself a new bike :)

Had ridden past it for a while on the way to work and noticed it was for sale, so eventually, when out for our a walk as part of allocated exercise, I went over to have a look.

With much talking at a distance and wiping down, the sale was eventually made.

It was always on the cards I'd get one, and thought this would be too expensive, but was a pretty good price, basically trade in price.

Comes with panniers, registered in late 2015 and only 8K on the clock.

Chuffed to bits with it.   :moto:

Bike Talk / Tyre kicking...Triumph Speed Four

Other than challenging looks, anyone have any experience of them; they get good reviews as having decent handling and come with decent suspension compared to other naked/semi-faired middle weights

Mechanical / Timing chain stretched?
May 09, 2017, 08:44:05 AM
Well the fun of the F800ST was brought to an untimely hiatus at the weekend. Loss of power and development of loud rattle/archetypal bag of spanners led to the bike making the test of the journey courtesy of the AA.

Started looking at it yesterday, plugs look OK, I think, other than a huge gap. The valve clearances are within the limits, if at extremes across a the cylinder. Noticed that the timing chain sometimes went slack between the cams though, that shouldn't happen, should it? The timing marks still seem to line up.
Video here, apologies for the sniffing. Bike is in to gear, no plugs and dipstick out, but still required quite an effort to move.

Next move will be head off, PITA that the rear swing arm attaches to the engine case!

Hi,

As above, the zx6r has developed an intermittent problem when running, especially over bumpy roads.

Sometimes it is very quick and feels like the back wheel has hit a pothole, another time the engine does completely and refuses to start (engine turns over, resetting kill switch etc) until keyed off then on again.

My initial thoughts were side stand cut out, but not sure that would cause the second behaviour, could be two different problems I suppose...

Bike Talk / Beemer Twins - Boxers or F800s
October 24, 2016, 03:49:28 PM
Bit of a virtual tyre kicking, but anyone any experiences with these machines?

Loved by wee ER6, it was just a wee it down on power and the only other Twin that has decent power (that I also like), non sports, is the shiver 750.. until I remebered the beemers.

F800S/F800R gets a good right up, but also like the look of the R1100S, especially the Boxer Cup - HP2 would be lovely, but unlikely

Some good, but some mixed reviews, also curious about the belt drive on the F800S and the torque reaction and gears shifts.

I did have a cx500 back in the day and a vague recollection that there was some different reaction within the suspesion to acceleration/deceleration in corners in particular.

Had thought of the TDM, but it only has 10bhp more than the Kwak and was thinking that beemers might be more reliable than Italian twins.

Mechanical / Bleeding brakes!!!!
August 03, 2015, 09:59:07 PM
Just replaced the front caliper on sons cg125 and, after 1 litre of brake fluid being pumped through, still getting air bubbles in various quantities and sometimes a huge amount - master cylinder knackered or could it be something else?

Cheers

Mechanical / zx6r j1 not quite running right...
July 22, 2014, 09:19:18 AM
Couple of wee niggles that I need help tracking down, may be the same root cause;

When I first got the bike it wouldn't idle at a constant RPM and needed idle adjuster played with on nearly all the time when stopped. Suspected carb rubbers leaking and spraying easy start confirmed this...which is when I found that the carbs must have been off at some point as the clamps were not done up properly - with this now done the revs stay nice and constant when warmed up...however, there are the following niggles:

1) When slowing down to a halt from motorway speeds, then bike sometimes doesn't even try to idle and cuts out
2) Doesn't idle well when cold
3) There seems to be a dead spot just above idle and then it really picks up revs - make pulling away trickier than it should be
4) Seems very sensitive to backing off the throttle when above 9krpm

Is there still an air leak somewhere; have checked all pipes and everything seems to be ok... Not replaced the spark plugs yet, but that is on the cards. Only other thing I have done is clean and re-oil the filter.

Mechanical / Age old problem - zx6r oil light
July 01, 2014, 11:21:21 PM
Just picked up a 6r J1 last night, did a wee 200 mile shakedown run, everything fine, upto the redline no probs with no sign o=f distress.

Changed the oil and filter tonight and now the oil light won't go off :(

Let it run for about 20 seconds at a time, engine is quite, no rattling or that, also slackened the filter off and oil came out, not a jet, but definitely seemed to be under pressure, but still no joy. Even tried a wee rev.

Anything else I should try>

Cheers

A long shot, but have just picked up a zx6r J1. It has been lowered, so looking to set it back to standard height at the back, so if anyone has any of these parts available.

Does anyone know the length of the standard sidestand?

Bike Talk / Buying a bike from a distance
May 13, 2014, 06:33:32 AM
A friend is buying a bike, privately, at a distance, including getting it delivered and thought I read somewhere there was some way to mortgage the risk with a middle man interceding?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Bodywork / Fitting control to new bars
April 13, 2014, 11:56:01 PM
Drill the bars, or file the locating dowels?

Filing seems to be the most popular way, but just thought I'd run it by you guys here first.

By that I am assuming minimum of filling so that there is still some friction exerted when tight?

Cheers.

Mechanical / Siezed sump plug
March 02, 2014, 05:48:19 PM
Ah, the joys of 'preloved' bikes!

First task, as always was to change the oil and filter and had a wee 5 minutes spare, so set about it...stalled at first hurdle in that I cannot get the sump plug to budge and it looks like the previous owner couldn't either as it is a bit chewed already.

Any hints and tips as to how best to proceed? The lower frame rail prevents use of a socket and therefore impact driver, though I am not sure if an impact driver would be advisable on an ally sump?

Cheers

Bike Talk / None of the above...
March 01, 2014, 02:29:48 PM
Well, after asking about TDMs and Zephyrs....

it was goodbye to the 7R:

and hello to the Fazer 600  :embarrassed: :afro:

Bit cooler on the run home with that skinny half fairing though and really baldy front tyre...!!

Bike Talk / Yet another bike opinion sought: zephyr 1100
February 18, 2014, 07:22:41 PM
While I had resigned myself to not owning a Kwak, and lack of local TDMs, I've got the chance of a deal with a zephyr 1100.

Other than a lack of gears and an excess of spark plugs, what are they like to ride; fun or a lard bucket, anyone know?
