Title: Uninsured - and a warning
Post by: ash on January 08, 2014, 06:38:33 PM
I bought a scooter as a non running project/box of bits in september, transported it back to my house in my car and stuck it straight up onto a big table where it has remained ever since, and I've not really looked at it at all as I've just been too busy. Waited for an age to get the V5 from DVLA and had to chase the previous owners for ... which turned up just before Christmas.
Get a 'final warning' in the post stating that it was uninsured in the middle of November and I now owe them £100 fine....me....I've not even seen a first advisory letter yet which I assume has got lost in the Christmas post :(

Bollocks...I've not even ridden the bike yet ...and it is going to be carved up with an angle grinder when I start work on swapping the engine out when I get the other donor bike, but just found out that even if the bike has tax, and even if you don't intend to insure or use it in the immediate future, you are breaking the law unless you immediately SORN a vehicle you buy if you don't insure and tax it.

Fuggin..barstewards...I can't dodge this one...I wish I'd had a bit more warning of the fine now though as I've just opened the envelope tonight to be confronted with a final demand which I didn't even realise I had acquired.  Jan is a shit month whichever way you look at it !

Be warned if you buy a track bike or another non runner as a project...they will sting you if you don't make the declaration....even if they spend 3 or 4 months issuing a new V5 so you can declare it as sorn. Previous sorns also become invalid as soon as the vehicle changes hands.

That has been the case for some time.  Any gap and they will fine you as they assume that it's in use on the road.

I get the V5 a couple of weeks ago, and now a bloody fine. I wish they had sent through a warning with the V5...they didn't even acknowledge my ownership of the bike until after the date they stated it wasn't insured (the V5 issue date code was in December)..I'm wondering if they sent the letters to the previous owner as the tax disk is still on the bike.

No harm in at least raising the point with the DVLA.
