Title: Yamaha TDM 850 opinions?
Post by: DaveH on February 07, 2014, 08:27:26 PM
Contemplating changing the 7R, and even thinking about a non Kawasaki!!

With that in mind have seen a TeDiuM locally and wondered if anyone had any experience of views on them ; they get an ok review in mcn.

Cheers

Hugely under-rated bike.

I've liked them since the day they were launched and would have had one if the money allowed back then. Really liked the TRX too :moto:

Now, I'm off to see what's on the Autotrader website, XBR, XJ, TRX.....

I've always had a soft spot for the TDM.  Years ahead of its time really when you think the first version was launched over 20 years ago.

Tall. Heavy. Slow. Got a broken 02 one in my garage. BEWARE they use a lot of oil and the pressure warning light wont come on when the level is low. Having had a 7r as well I would say only a madman would make that change. I only got one for commuting to work with the idea it would slow me down. It played that part perfectly !

Hi Mike, cheers for the info, background to the change is that I also used to have an ER6F, and the 7R was hardly getting used, ER^ is now gone, and as much as I love the &, I miss better visibility given by the riding position.

Also, while I love the sound of the IL4, I like the characteristics of the (parallel) twin, the ER6 went well, but occasionally could have done with a bit more power, which the TDM has. If I had the budget I'd actually consider a Shiver, (if I could see past an 03-05 Z1000 ;) )

What is up with yours, was it oil related and is it the 850, or 900?

Slow compared to a litre Sportsbike...but in real world conditions where we ride most decent progress can be made...slow is not an adjective you can use on a modern motorcycle.

Never ridden a TDM, but had a TRX for a short time.... I assume they have the same engine?

Having ridden the thing hard up and down the Cat & Fiddle with none other than James Whitham; who was also riding one...... we both agreed at the time (albeit many years ago), that it was all you ever needed from a road bike.

I wouldn't call it slow either, but then again, the last modern superbike I rode on the road was a K1 thou'..... mental.

Yep, same engine.

Dave mine is a 850 ( still sitting in my garage)
Shop who I do trust say the big end has "gone" and its not viable to repair.
Have been looking on ebay for another engine but they are like hens teeth coz so many go bang !
