Title: Track bike rules
Post by: YODI on February 08, 2014, 03:57:38 PM
Hi Guys,

I won a track bike this morning, it was advertised as a track bike too.

I'm going to check the frame number on the database make sure it doesn't come up as stolen etc, the seller says it's unregistered but I will find out myself, my concern is that the he says in a message it has no engine number either and it' been ground off.

So will there be any issues at a track day for a bike with no engine number?

Thanks, Yodi

Well done mate. I never win anything. A mate won an Escort Cosworth a few years back from a £1 raffle ticket!

Ive never had a bike checked for numbers but i read somewhere police did did a random spot check on bikes at a uk circuit last not so long back and they seized any bike without numbers

Spoken to the guy by message, he said he has a DVLA letter confirming its not a UK bike and I have just checked it by frame number too and its not on the database so hoping it's a legit import.

Did he give a reason for the engine number being missing?

No, but I asked if it's been ground off and it has.

There is no legit reason to grind off an engine number..........

I'll probably just bust it for parts as I need some for mine anyway

The ONLY reason for a lack of engine number is someone wanting to disguise it's identity.

If the police do a random track check (as they have done a few times) they WILL confiscate any bike that doesn't have straight numbers in place.  It's then up to you to prove and provide evidence as to why things don't match their computers.  No evidence results the bike going through the crusher.

That's what I thought, I could justify the frame as he says he has a letter from the dvla as he took it there for an inspection showing thats its not a UK bike so that would be ok, but the engine number missing annoyed me.

I could still buy it and use some of the bits for my other one and sell the rest on, but the frame and engine are worthless so have to tally up if its worth it.

Ive only just clicked......you didnt win this as a prize did you?

Its a tough one.....the last thing you or anyone else needs is to buy it, break it, and end up getting nicked for Handling stolen goods ( thats IF the engine is hooky ).....long story short, a mate is in the vehicle trade game. He brought a car in good faith but turned out to be cloned. Old bill nick him and as he is in the motor trade search his house, business etc etc. He was cleared of any wrong doing but the grief that went with it was a pain in the arse. He lost the x amount of £ he paid for the car too

The frame number wouldn't bother me as you can but a frame and it wouldn't have a number on it, or it could have always been a track bike. He should have proof of this anyway.

With regards to the engine number I can only think if 2 things. It's nicked or an insurance write off, that said I'm not sure if an insurance co would grind an engine number (frame number - yes).

The frame sounds legit, it's had a DVLA inspection and been paid for, has the paperwork with it.

The engine I can't explain, could be from a stolen bike

Even a cat b write off only has the last 4 frame numbers overstamped with "X's".

There's no reason for anyone to remove an engine number unless they are trying to hide it's identity.

I wouldn't touch the bike with a barge pole...............

Hi again guys and girls.

I didn't buy that track bike, it was relisted and again no one bid after a couple of pm's we didnt see eye to eye and that was that.

So I have a Gsxr 600 k1 already, and I've never done a track day, I know i'll be shite but I want to have a go I just need leathers to zip to my jacket.

So, what do you guys suggest about track days for someone who's not ridden in 2 years, but also to add that I want the bike to be road legal so I can use it weekends and maybe to work and back.

Could I do my first couple of track days on road tyres?

Any advice?

depends on the road tyres you've got on.

3 yr old touring tyres might not be a good idea. latest gen of sportsbike tyres will be fine (more than fine to be honest)

You will need, one piece or 2 piece (full zip) leathers, Good gloves/ boots /helmet. Bke in good general condition plenty of life in brake pads and tyres all fluids at the correct levels.

Road tyres will be fine for your fist few days, modern road tyres are good for all but the very fastest folk.

Take it easy to start with and try not to end up 'racing' your mates, someone else who nipped past.

It's great fun but addictive, you have been warned  ;)

Thanks guys.

That's what I was hoping about the tyres, saves buying track wheels etc and the hassle of swopping them when I will do the odd day.

I have an alpine stars jack, but its only a rear half zip, if I got trousers is that acceptable?

As for racing my mates, non of them are bikers

zip needs to be full length, half zip just at he back isn't acceptable.
