Depends on the bike - I'd download a copy of the manual and see what it says.

The recommended play on my R6 is larger than it was on the J2!

It varies from bike to bike. My gixxer is 30mm but the beemer says 40-50mm which seems really slack to me. What bike is it? I tend to measure with a ruler rather than rely on the swingarm markings which can be out a bit.

I've always gone by the rule that if it moves about an inch that's about right..... but I'm no mechanic!

I might be wrong but I was under the impression that the chain slackness should be measured with you sat on it - also, if you've adjusted it on the side stand make sure it doesn't alter drastically once you move the bike.

The general rule is an inch of play

On my 04 I think it's about 35mm...

Sorry to link to other forums but the manuals are here:

that's what i thought i am not a heavy person i weigh about 11 stones so i wouldn't have thought the chain would tighten much more with me sat on it

The manual should tell you the conditions for testing eg with the bike upright/on the stand/loaded/unloaded

I go between 25mm and 35mm at the slackest point on the underside of the swingarm.. it helps once you have found it to use an indelible marker on the swingarm so you can find this point easily again.

I've never had a bike yet that needs to be loaded to set the tension.

Yes, you're not riding it hard enough!

Ridden hard, yes. Ridden often, no. That's the problem.

Hardly practical is it for a routine maintenance activity to require two people?!

Is there really bikes that require the slack to be measured when loaded?

Out of interest how frequently do you guys have to adjust the tension on your ZX6Rs'?

I thought the slack was measured unloaded so that when loaded the slack was negligible but not too tight....

I honesty can't remember who told me.... I think it was my dad but he hasn't ridden in 40 years! Being as it was my Dad and therefore the found of all knowledge, I never questioned it!

Remember lube it when it's warm,
Adjust it when it's cold :-)

Are you doing any of the local bike nights ? - I saw a couple of S1000RR's at last nights meeting in Stroud.
