Having seen this article on the BBC website this morning:

....it got me thinking about how compatible autonomous cars & cyclists/motorcyclists would be....so I thought I'd see what a bit of group-wisdom would make of it.
I'm a complete layman when it comes to the very clever tech that these sort of vehicles will be using & I know that MOZ for example might shine some light on it as his "work-van" is no doubt using some of it.
I imagine that as well as a satellite link for location, gyro's for stabilty etc....that they must also have sensors for collision detection/avoidance, presumably similar in some way to modern parking sensors....
....now I can see that all of this might work satisfactorily in an environment that only has vehicles of a similar size/footprint on the road & therefore similar patterns of likely manoeuvres....but what confuses me is how these "proximity-detectors" would cope with cyclists/motorcyclists making manoeuvres such as filtering in slow moving queues?
Presumably the car is programmed to not-want objects within a certain space around them - so a bike suddenly shooting past during a filtering move would presumably cause the driverless car to make an evasive move? - after all, how would it know the difference between a planned moved by an adult & a toddler running out & about to be squashed?
Please enlighten me if I'm being too simplistic/dim/missing something. :azn:

I have wondered whether this idea would lead to young fuckwit pedestrians in central London just walking straight out into the road in front of traffic, safe in the knowledge that the cars would be programmed to perform an emergency stop.
Well, doing that more than they already do that anyway, that is...
I have my concerns over it, the problem with all technology is that at some point it fails
maybe the argument is that it fail less often than humans make mistakes
but at least humans have the ability to judge and make decisions based on factors outside of their programming

That's a good point - I was following a lorry yesterday which was being driven a little erratically to say the least and I made the judgement to stay weeeeeell back. Lucky I did because on one corner he mounted the grass verge significantly and threw a ton of mud etc onto the carriageway which I was able to avoid in good time and with no sudden moves. An automated vehicle would have stayed x distance from vehicle in front and would have had to make last second moves.
Ah I'm glad its not just me that sees a few major issues with this technology.
Some good points made above.
I can even envisage a 360degree roof mounted camera that could "take-in" the entire situation that the car is in....& clever algorithms that could pick out cyclists/motorcyclists etc....& even anticipate possible moves that they may make.....
....but I just can't see how it will ever be able to tell the difference between say - a merely hesitant driver who has just passed their test - & a drunk driver - or a road rage situation.
I've had chavs stand in the road playing chicken on the odd occasion - what would stop them from just taking p1ss once they twig onto the fact that a driverless car will always slam the brakes on rather than hit them?
In the year 2025 maybe - but 2015 seems a bit optimistic to me.

....one little point to note after having had numerous discussions with various folk at work, down the pub etc...this week....
....I have yet to encounter a single person that actually "wants" a driverless car.
Those that are enthusiastic drivers,....well, they enjoy driving obviously.
Those that arent have said that they wouldnt trust the tech/other drivers.
So - good luck with that Google - before investing a few £100million on the tech - I'd suggest spending a few £thousand on researching the potential market - you might find it pretty much doesnt exist!
wouldn't mind pushing a button and my car can drive me home from the pub.... but that's only real appeal to me

Exactly, wouldn't be great to send your car a text with your current location, then bish bosh it pulls up outside and takes you home! Plus you can enjoy another beer straight out the fridge in the back of your car!
