I know the rules have changed but can't find the answer to this one.
If I decide to tax my bike using the monthly direct debit payment method, am I free to cancel it and put the bike on SORN whenever I choose?
This would make perfect sense to me as I would start it now and finish it end of Oct meaning I only pay for 8 months saving about £24 if I was to tax it for 12 months.
Does anyone know if this is possible or is the deirect debit deal for either 6 or 12 months coverage only?
as far as I am aware yes.
Paying vehicle tax by Direct Debit
From 1 October 2014 (5 October if setting up at a Post Office®), Direct Debit will be offered as an additional way to pay for vehicle tax. This will be available for customers who need to tax their vehicle from 1 November 2014:
annually
6 monthly
monthly (12 months tax paid for on a monthly basis)
Tax will be automatically renewed and the Direct Debit payments will continue to be taken providing an MOT is in place at the point of tax renewal. Payments will continue automatically until you tell DVLA to stop taking them or you cancel the Direct Debit with your bank. Valid insurance should also be in place for vehicles registered in Northern Ireland.
The Direct Debit will be cancelled and payments automatically stopped when you tell DVLA that you no longer have the vehicle, or the vehicle has been taken off the road and a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) has been made. The Direct Debit will also be cancelled if a vehicle is scrapped by anATF, exported or if the tax class of the vehicle is changed to an exempt duty tax class.
As far as I'm aware you actully buy the 12 months and you pay for it monthly you only stop paying it if you sell the vehicle.
The extract that Iain found appears to suggest you can SORN the vehicle any time you want and that automatically cancels the DD.
Time to give it a go I think. £7 a month for the biking season is better than £80 for the whole year when the bike will be garaged for 3-4 months of it.

took all of about 10 seconds to find that info ;) just tax it for the 12 months you can afford it :azn:

Makes a massive difference. That's 2 pairs of shoes for the girls.
It's a piece of piss. Tax it today is the start of the month. Remember to cancel it at the end of the month. One button click online and hassle (and money) is saved.
Can I have the name of your cobbler? My kids shoes cost more than mine and they are less tan half the size, I think I'm being had over.
My kids have small feet and all their shoes are bought from the Clarks Factory Store. Average about £15 a pair for school shoes etc

I was looking for the same answer a few weeks ago, having 3 bikes there's no point taxing them all. I was thinking just tax them online before taking one out then cancelling and putting it back on SORN at the end of the month. I wonder if that would work?
I believe it would. As long as you tax it on the first and SORN it before the end of the month you'd only pay for one month.
The downside to this is I suspect DVLA will not update the database as quick and you might risk being tugged by ANPR. If you forget to SORN it at the end of the month you will pay for the new month in full.
