Be gentle :(
no, it's a motorcycle..... and you gave someone some money for it.
Baby Jesus is smiling
Get in!
You need a hand picking it up?
Potentially!
Although with a bit of luck I'll try and get all the insurance sorted and ride it back.
On the face of things I think its a bit of a chuffin' bargain! As long as its mechanically alright it should be ideal for ragging around the lanes...
Looks a bargain to me!
Well the offer is there, let me know...
A very very kind offer - I will try not to take you up on it, but you know me... I'm a cheeky cunt for this type of thing at best, so expect a sheepish phone call at some point in the not so distant future ;)

That sounded a lot like Clarkson....you're not moonlighting on the side as his voiceover double Dan ?
Nice work dude - enjoy it!
My experience of cheap wr250's from eBay wasn't good!!
Hope you have a good one, great fun to ride. I spent more time with the engine on the bench rather than riding it!

If the rear suspension doesn't return to the same point when you compress it, the rear shock link and swing arm bearings will be utterly bolloxed, if it feels really stiff you won't get the swing arm or linkage apart without an angle grinder. I did two of them, I got mine apart with some serious difficulty, my mates we hammered the shit out of, but couldn't strip it down, both eventually went on eBay.
Even if it's burning all it's oil within a couple of rides, it barely smokes at all, check the rear number plate, if it is using oil the plate will be nicely blackened with an oily soot.
On the plus, even with fucked valves, worn cylinder and very tired rings, burning loads of oil... It always started first time... And even if the suspension is seized and fucked beyond belief, you can still ride it... Just you ass will hurt
Some good info there. Maybe I will take up Millhouse's offer as me and spanners aren't the best of friends.
Its cash on collection so if it's a crock of shit, I don't *have* to hand the money over.
Matt - did you have the F model? If so what year?

You better get acquainted with the spanners, those bikes need a lot of work to keep them going right.
It's hard to tell a pig from a gem. Give it a good looking over.
I had a wr250ft. The t is 2005. My mate had a v which was a 2006. I don't know what the difference was from 2001, think they were very similar.
I don't mind dropping the oil out etc, changing piston rings and sorted bent valves is beyond me a bit though!
Matt - thanks for the info, I may well PM you at some point for more advice :)

No problem. It was my first off-road bike and it taught me a lot.
Happy to help if I can.
Welcome to the dark side.
Let me know when you are ready to play.
PS - Paul from excess energy did me a very good deal on kit if you need some.
PS - If the eBay one does not work out you could buy this one.....

.... tis a smidge more money.
Ah yes - kit. I've heard second hand is the way to go since it gets all shitty anyway.
I actually can't wait to get out on the lanes :)
I cannae see the link - I think I need a TRF account or something to see their for sale section :/

It should come with a very comprehensive owner manual. I had two WR400F's from new.
You'll tell a lot by the owners garage. If it's got lots of air filter cleaning kits and bottles of oil lying around you're in business. if there is a late model Sportsbike and not much evidence of servicing kit you might want to factor in a bit of rebuild time! Proper offroad types will be changing the oil and greasing the linkages every two or three rides and oiling the air filter every week!
Having had a conversation on the phone to the chap, he's saying all the right things at least, unprompted was telling me about oiling the air filter every two rides, dropping the oil out every 3 or 4 rides, having had a new spring in the rear to soften it up a bit.
Fingers crossed eh..

there are some genuine people in the world so you may very well be getting a real bargain!
I was hoping for a life size cardboard cutout of Kelly Brook when I opened this thread!
That would be the drunken purchase of the century.
Not sure how I'd sneak that past the missus, mind :)

but that's been done before
Yes, and still makes me chuckle!!!!!
So.
Picked the bike up, initial inspection all ok - initial test ride all ok, and the deal was done.
Now the ride home - I'm going through the gears and sitting around 60 so as not to kill the engine too much, came to a bit of dual carriageway and opened it up in 5th to see if I could do anything above 70.
The answer is yes it can, but that's when it revealed its secret - 5th is fucked somehow. Pin the throttle and it accelerates, slips, accelerates more, slips.
Gear selectors must be fucked, full strip down required.
Fuck.

Ahh that's shit mate fixing them is half the fun though!
Engine out and casing split to get to the gears! Feel for you, not what you wanted.
Is it deff gearbox, not engine misfire!?
So it is fine under 60?
Ride it as it is, off road I have only been near 60 once or twice and by near I mean quite far away.

I was about to say 70 off road is a bit well craaaaaazyy!!
Get some photos up!
I also have my doubts about the frame/fork alignment as well if I'm honest!
Definitely not a misfire, its a slip of some kind.
In a real turn of events, the seller text me to see if I got home ok and was mortified to hear about the 5th gear issue. He's offered to come and collect it tomorrow and give me a refund.
I'll believe that when I see it though!

don't think its the clutch? , I take it you want your money back then?
I'll take my money back if he comes good.
I don't think its the clutch, it pulls absolutely fine throughout the range on all other gears - apparently other people have had similar issues with WRFs of the same year.
Shame as other than that and the suspect frame alignment, it seems like a good bike.

Ya never know he may do , yeah it doesn't sound like the clutch if its only in that gear
Well fuck me backwards with a rusty scaffold pole.
He turned up 10 minutes early with a van, money back, no fuss - a genuine nice guy.
I'm stunned.

But yours isn't a proper enduro bike.
Why would he want a street orientated bike to off-road on?

This is true........
Plenty of choice on Devon TRF forum at the moment - WR, KTM or CRF?
Ktm
If KTM did a dual sport bike and I was minted - Then perhaps i'd consider one.
For now it's going to be WR250R (not F any more), CRF250L or KLX250.
A nice Softroader with LOW maintenance.
I'd steer clear of the Yam and Kwak and find a decent Honda.
Plenty of them about - They're mostly out of my budget at £3.5k
The only problem with the CRF250L is that they're woefully underpowered - Nothing that a few mods won't address, but doing so adds £££s to the equation :/

Well you listened to me well sorta......... You silly silly man....... Haha how much it setting you back?
If I've taken your advice, does that mean it'll have no engine number?
It was riiiight at the very very top of my budget at £2995 - From a Gas Gas dealer though, so hoping it'll be legit :)

only if your lucky! I thought they cost more than that , got many miles on it?
700 miles - its not a full on enduro bike, its a detuned 250 (and lower maintenance because of it). Its their trail bike - new they're 4k - this ones about 8 months old.
I knew as soon as I bought my DR that one of you lot would be along shortly with something newer and shinier.
When will you be out to play?
Trust me it won't be shiny after one ride. Just need to get the fecker back from Leeds and I'll be out to play - ninja force anyone? :)
Seriously though if anyone has any recommendations for a motorcycle courier type person, let me know!

get someone to drive you up and ride it down , or if its the leeds near Maidstone (which I doubt) I could possibly deliver it?
Riding it back. :undecided: Unless it is within 20/30 miles I would forget it.
Ride it back? It'd need two services and a change of tyres just to get home!
Van it is :)
haha o dear....
Plenty of couriers on eBay about £75 as I recall, not used any personally

You bought a GasGas.
You are clearly mental - best of luck. They make the WR look like a reliability award winner.

Way to piss on my chips, hotshot.
:undecided:
I'm sure it will be fine. :moto:
To be fair though, you asked for opinions, they were given. KTM or CRF
I'm afraid I've only ever heard bad things about GGs but then bad news is all you hear, no one shouts about their bike "working".
On a serious note did you buying a gasgas have anything to do with me suggesting it?
Quote from: Carbon_ZX6R on April 19, 2015, 07:00:06 PM

'Fraid not - I bought it because it's not a hooligan machine like other GasGas bikes, it's a detuned xr250 engine aimed at the green laning market. It shares a lot with the AJP PR5 which are quite popular among the trail riding scene.
Moz: I asked for opinions - I'm glad I got them (good or bad!).
That's good as I would have got something like a ktm exc 250 or simmiler
All the bad stuff I've heard about GG's have been about their strokers - enjoy.
