Title: 180 rear tyre on a 1000
Post by: LewisBeGoog on July 20, 2015, 12:23:27 PM
Howdy all.

just noticed the previous owner has put a 180 on the back of the 1000rr blade, its feels fine and certainly the handling was a lot quicker than I expected (no bad thing)

Question though, Its going to be replaced in the next 1500 miles (only 2 months for me) Do I stick with the 180 or go back to the original 190? Generally I do road miles and maybe 1/2 trackdays a year.

If you are happy with feel of the 180 stick with it, as you say should quicken the steering slightly but with a marginal loss of grip. 190 is standard though so your choice really.

I'd go back to a 190. I doubt that there will be much difference to the quickness of the steering, but the impact on edge grip when you begin to dial in all that power could be significant...... especially on a track day.

190 for sure...more edge grip which can only be a good thing.

Kind of what I was thinking, On the road its no issue, I am not going to gas it up that hard on corner exit.

However having lost the back end under power at Silverstone in the dry with the same size tyre and only 100BHP on the zx-6r makes me a little worried about edge grip. Hmm might try the 190 next time.

It's not pure edge grip either, you're talking 5mm across say a 50mm wide contact patch from mid lean onwards.

On modern thou's, I'd say it's important.

The whole 180 on a 6 inch rim came about due to 180's being available in 55 profile before 190's did. Fitting a narrower tyre than what is meant to be on the wheel actually flattens the tyre which is what you dont want.

If you have a 6 inch rim then fit a 190 - if you want the bike to a bit more nimble then fit a 55 profile rather than a 50. It's noticeable even on a big lump like my road bike and I much prefer they way the bike handles with the 55 profile tyre.

Is it 190/50 or 190/55 as standard?
Back a few years ago people used to argue a 180/55 steered a bit quicker than a 190/50.  We used to call these people 'fucking idiots' but it seems some of them must have survived?
190/55 sizes put the argument to rest for good.

Lol. Well I didn't fit it so it's not me. Standard apparently is a 190/50 I have a 180/55 on there currently of that adds any clarity.
