Title: What would you buy?
Post by: MOzZereLLa on August 03, 2015, 05:38:51 PM
You have £3500 to spend on a modern classic. Must be registered before 1995 and be fun around a circuit.

Must be as original as possible.

What do you buy and why?

Have to add it must be realistic (ie available with minimal to moderate effort) and not like hens teeth.

GSXR/YZF/ZXR750 I reckon.  Bit of cash for a good going over for bearings, brakes and rubber and you'd have a bit of a laugh I reckon.

Have to say one of those bikes is on my eBay watch list already Dan.

Not sure I want a two stroke.

I'm struggling to find a decent YZF.

The reason for 1995 is I'm after something to join the classic trackdays events with. I might be able to sell that to the missus as they have much smaller groups and very stringent on track etiquette rules.

I would go out to buy a 1992 Blade in black and silver or maybe a 1997 Anniversary blade with the big gold RR on the side and come back with something completely different.

I suppose when the novice group gets a bit quick there's always the classic days.......................... ;)
Title: Re: What would you buy?

Early Fireblades were great fast road bikes but they were that great on track because of the funny front wheel/tyre size combo.  And they seem to fall into the category now of pristine and expensive or completely and utterly knackered.
750cc were the apex predator sportsbikes of the day.  I reckon a 916 of that era would be a liability.

I'm surprised you haven't been riding them from day one. At least you'll know what it's like to be faster than some of the others on track rather than none of the others.

I've never, ever claimed to be anything but an average rider but at least I can hold my own in the fast group on most proper track days days rather than playing the big man riding round in inters on an airfield day especially after all the years spent bigging up your ability on here with no real reason to do so.

You can dish the banter but you cant take it but then I've known that for years.

This was banter also. Banter can be returned quite legitimately - making your comment a little pot kettle don't you think ;-)

I was going to call Gobert this morning and utter the words "good banter". I ended up uttering the word "sorry".

I'm too soft!!

Great suggestion Carbon. If you can find me one for £3500 that's not a fucking wreck I'm in.

The problem now is that Golden Era Superbikes and the like are becoming a popular classes which is pushing the price of certain bikes upwards.

Decent original YZFs are like hens teeth. Might look at an early ZXR

If you go ZXR get an L model (93-95).  The J that preceded it was restricted to 100ps to keep the EU happy.  I had '94 L2 from new and loved it.  It's a better bike than the ZX7 R that replaced it.
Title: Re: What would you buy?

if it was the sake of fantasy and I didn't have to worry about using the thing I would have a 748 in a heartbeat. If I actually had to part with my actual money it would be a VFR400.

If I was looking for a bike for every day and I was actually looking in 1995 I'd likely go for an early 90's CBR, either the 600F or the 1000. Still like the look of them amongst modern bikes now.

I actually like the H model as a bit more old skool.

If you're looking to do more sensible track days, why not consider the road bike only option.

Must have a full MOT (no daylight), road legal zorsts (98db) etc.

Only 2 groups, no 'Fast' group.

Dicko's doing one this month at Donny. I can't do it as my bike is too loud but I'll be watching and shall report back with my findings.

If be interested to hear too. The classic days restrict numbers in groups and ban any overtaking once committed to taking corners until you are accelerating away again. Any "modern classic" I buy will be road registered.

when it comes to zxr's the H2 was a bit better than the H1 (bigger carbs, less rubbish oil filter design, better swingarm, bigger radiator e.t.c) but both of them had cripplingly solid rear ends. The J was supposedly the best handling but less powerful than the H2 or the L but was the lightest by about 10kg, the L was the ugliest (subjective I know!) and probably now the cheapest for a clean example and certainly the fastest thanks to the top end from the homologation K model but without the flatslides.

I'd say the best one to have if you dont want to mess with it is an L, as you do notice the lack of top end power on a J and those extra 18hp actually make a surprisingly large difference! But the J is prettier and the H2 has more retro cool
