Anyone had one? anyone know of any particular problems with them?
Belts from crank to cams weak...short service intervals...short rev range...dry clutch...look stunning...handle well...sound amazing.
Nothing in particular other than the usual Ducati difficulties (for instance my mates' won't start after he's washed it) but I've heard complaints that they are relatively tricky to ride / won't turn in / crippling on the back and wrists.
Have you had a chance to ride one for a decent amount of time?
The Forums are full of both woes and joys...imperative you buy a well cared for example...they can be money pits...the latest Panigale engines are light years ahead...wet clutch...gear driven not belts...and rev out much better.
They take some learning/experimenting with to ride on track but on road are sublime... other than the exhausts toasting your legs.

In fairness my mates have only moaned about the difficulty with turning in etc on track.
You could always get one Millhouse, then you could let us all know for sure? :moto:
Well it's a toss up between that and an 08 r1
08 R1 wins for me. Beautiful. Quick...reliable.

+1 for me . The Duke will inevitably come with the highs and lows of owning an Italian bike, which I can't deal with.... a machine has got to be easy to live with for me to enjoy it. Boring I know.
Fuck you all with your sensible suggestions!!!
May go a take a cheeky look at one tomorrow...

As per your sig..... employ Rule #5 and go for the Duke!!
:moto:
I had the 08 R1 (obviously not the 1098) and I regret selling it. I did 830 miles over 3 days to Scotland on it, several trackdays and it was faultless whatever I asked it to do. Aside from the master cylinder seals but I suspect that was from the dickhead previous owner and his love of cheap bling.
I think this calls for a feisty test ride.
One could bring joy...the other remove joy...only you can decide which is which.

One's black, the other's white...... Or they could both be black..... Or white..... Or grey

Exactly
Go for the Duke. It looks so purdy :)
Also, reliability isn't really a factor for a garage ornament!

There's a real risk I may have to actually use it. And just to add insult to injury I may even have to get to work on it!!

I've commuted to work on the 1098 a few times, even once made it from Liverpool to Milton Keynes in a business suit for a client meeting
The 1098 sure is pretty...... but, so was PJ's R1, in those colours..... wow
i considered one on a couple of occasions
but glad i waited for the panigale
the riding position on the 1098s was quite extreme
and not sure i could deal with "traditional" ducati servicing requirements
So looks alone, which one?

looks alone you already no the answer. I bet despite all that's been said on here you haven't wavered at all and are still 75:25 in favour of the duke!
The R1 in that guise is stunning. A well balanced design. The 1098 is stunning too. I think the vote would be closer to 50/50...R1 all the way for all the right reasons.
This is a classic head/heart decision so I'm gonna play devil's advocate here:
No one really *needs* a bike, no one buys a bike using their head?
Buying a bike is and always will be about buying with whatever whets your loin.
In those colours, the Duke....... the R1 in the colours PJ had is a much closer affair.

I think PJ also had black seats, which look better.
Should never have sold her!

Red/white never did it for me. Blood and bandage connotations
You're quite wrong
I'll counter that with....
Meh.
Componentry on the Duke is great but make sure the forks and shock have been serviced.
Yamaha still looks better.
For me, I'd go R1 out of those two, easy decision.
You'll get the Duke absolutely love it they cry everytime you have to service it, or it breaks down or wont start. The R1 is nearly as pretty and none of those others things apply.
I have no time for expensive things that don't work. It was a second bike however maybe

Does look fit though. Any of the new Dukes look unbelievably good in matt black too!
