Title: Ear Plugs - ANYONE USED THESE?????
Post by: MOzZereLLa on June 17, 2016, 07:58:22 AM
An MCN review of these cropped up on my FB feed.

Anyone got these or used them. I swear by the old soft foam plugs but washable reusable appeals.

Are they still the soft crushable type?

Worth a try...different shaped ear holes and hearing ability will give differing opinions...buy and try.  :moto:

Not used them but I find the regular £2 a pair foam ones more than good enough and cheap enough to replace often when they get sweaty/dirty etc.

Surely you can get the disposable ones from work?

Only the barrel shaped yellow ones which are a little hard. I use the bullet shaped soft ones.

Due to the nature of them (and advice from the medics at work) I only use them a couple of times each max making that quite expensive. Washable reusable appeals.

I used to be an advocate for the made-to-measure ones, but I'm now convinced that not only are the cheap foam ones "good enough", they are actually significantly better than any other option.

Anything else seems to shift in my ear once I put my helmet on and reduces the attenuation level, such that on a long journey I start to get ringing in my ears, which is a clear sign that you're starting to do damage.

It was getting the Panigale that really brought that home, because it's so frickin' loud I was noticing the ringing sooner - and from the engine noise not the wind noise.

I tend to re-use them until they start to look grubby, then chuck them and replace them.

Moz, what's the medics' advice on this?

Should I be changing them more often?

My experience with the made-to-measure ones was exactly the same as Tucola.
I find the disposables much better in every respect.

Disposables are cheap enough if you buy a big box of them.

You can even split the cost with a mate or some mates.

Beware this does make you a bit like Ear Plug Santa in terms of generosity which does drive the cost up again.

@Tuc

Only that they get grubby quite quickly and depending on how long you have them in for the likelihood of infection gets higher.

They are quite ear "aware" at work due to the nature of our job and how ears can ground us very easily.

The best sort I've found this far. Just wondered how long the Auritech ones last if they are washable.

I get the impression that the custom moulded ones are only as good as the bloke that takes the mouldings of your lugholes.  Mine were absolutely spot on and I'd never go back to sponge ones.

I have to agree I'm on my second set of moulded plugs, first ones were made in Jan 2005, they were replaced this Jan (moulds made at the bike show by Ulitmate Ear) and I can't fault them.

One point I would make is that I shouldn't have waited as long to replace (apparently 5 years is abut right not 11  :embarrassed: ) so the newer ones are MUCH MUCH better than the old ones are now. The new ones also have filters in whereas the old ones don't. Wind noise/white noise is significantly reduced but I can still hear other road users fine. OK so they cost £85 but assuming 5 years use against a set of throw away foam plugs at £2 a pop (2 x 52 x 5 + £208) the moulded ones are cheaper and work better.

All IMHO of course, works for me.

I went to them as I have rather narrow ear canals and the foam one are a pain to fit and work themselves out, the moulded ones stay put.

I've still got the original plastic mould.  I assume I could just send off and get new ones made from that?

yes you could BUT your ears do change over time hence the 5 years recommendation. It's only now I have my new ones I have realised how much the old ones have loosened off. Still OK for wearing in bed though.

The ears are the only part of the human body that never stop growing throughout your life. Look at old men's ears, they're always troll like big....

The best foam plugs are about 12p a pair if you buy a box of 200 pairs off Ebay.....

My understanding is that size of the cartilaginous outer ear indeed increases as you age, but the ear canal doesn't change once your swede has attained its full adult size because it's bone innit.

Reason for changing M2M plugs every five years is more likely to be change in the size of the plugs than change in the size of the ear.

I've used those Orange ear plugs for a few years now. I used to get them free from work so don't think they are bike specific.
I found the stem that you grip on to put them in and out can be uncomfortable as it's quite hard, so I cut it short which made them a little harder to take out. From experience they block out sound extremely well.
I've just bought a new lid and got some of these Pinlock ones free.
http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/212436
There is no hard stem on them and looking forward to using them in Brno next week.

PS I wouldn't actually spend £20 on them for what they are though.

I have a set of the auritech plugs you asked about moz, got them to use on the off road bike on the basis that I could hear better when we are stopped still with lids on. I used them for 5miles to ride on the road to my mates house then went back to my cheap disposable orange ones. Although the filter allows you to hear conversation better it does allow more noise In overall.  The wind noise wasn't nice. Also if you get a bit sweaty they start to move around. I rarely use them now. If I'm spectating or in pit garages is about the only time I use them.

I used to use foam ear plugs but got professionally moulded ear plugs made up 6 years ago by Ultimate Ear. The difference was incredible!!

I ride nearly every day - I commute to work on the bike using "blank" plugs and I ride as part of my job with plugs that accomodate my comms/music. With this amount of riding, I want decent protection.

3 years after my first pair were made up I went in for another fitting. My ears had changed but the new plugs weren't made correctly. This was rectified free of charge and another pair were made up and received within a week.

Just had my latest "work" moulds done and they've changed again. The difference was noticable immediately - the new ones feel tighter and the noise, especially wind at higher speeds, has significantly reduced. So I'm getting a new set of blanks made up too.

Whilst some of you say that "these are only £XXX per pair/hundred of pairs" etc and are more worried about price than your hearing, that's fine if you only ride a few weekends a year. But for someone riding a lot, spend a few extra quid and keep your hearing :thumbright:

Have you tried all foam plugs? There is a big difference from brand to brand in how they feel and how much sound they block out.

What sort of SNR numbers to the custom jobs claim? Just checked - nowhere near the better foam plugs that are available however I'd be interested to know if you'd tried the EAR Soft FX foam plugs? If the custom one's you use are that much better than the FX's then I'd seriously look at a set ...........

I got some done last year by these muppets, they used the wrong material for the plugs so they were worse than useless. Took 3 months for them to arrive because 'they had a lot of orders at the show', then when I complained that they didn't work they wouldn't return my calls or emails and when I did speak to someone (usually the receptionist) they told me that the managers were 'too busy' to speak to people.

Worse customer service than Ryanair - fucktards.

Wasn't impressed with the pin lock ones I posted up. Absolutely useless on track, just have well not put them in. Don't know if road use would be ok.
I reverted back to the Orange type I got from work.
