Title: Looking for a project to get me back into bikes.
Post by: Brian on November 26, 2016, 12:40:08 AM
I've not been on here for a while. No bike etc.. Now want a cheap project to fettle, and eventually sell for a pittance in crates and boxes..

Joking aside, looking for anything 650cc upwards that would take to a Wrench Monkees style makeover

Needs to be cheap, as I'm not working now, or in the forseeable future, due to ill health. The kind that only goes away with a new liver..

So what have you got hiding in the back of the shed or garage? I'm fairly competent mechanically, so not scared of something that needs work, but would rather start with something close to complete, as opposed to aforementioned boxes of bits.

Cash waiting for the right bike, ideally (much) less than a grand. What y'all got, then?

Good to see you back Bri Bri and aside from the bike project I sincerely hope you overcome your health problems

Cheers Danoir. Good to be back, and see some familiar names. Even if I'm bikeless, I still have my MR2 for getting out and about in the summer to see people.

And a fine MR2 it is too!:-)

I have a friend who has a ZX7R sat in his garage.  Nothing wrong with as such but hasn't been run for years. Want me to ask him if it's for sale?

His wife has banned him from bikes so he is just in denial over keeping it.

Lewis, always interested in a price, ta.

I've just seen a heavily modified clean gpz 900r go for £620 on ebay. I nearly bid on it.

I had a v plate 500 version as my first big bike. Rattle can in black, no mirrors etc. I loved it. I made an offer on the yellow one, but it was very low.

He will probably want to much but no harm in asking

Sorry to hear you're poorly Bri. Hope there are plans to get you said new liver!

Does it have to be a road bike. My mate Andy (who used to be on here) has an old cagiva mito which him and a friend were in the midst of putting a gilera 650 lump in. It's nearly finished with the engine in, custom made exhausts in place etc. It needs wiring up and finishing off (not an easy job I wouldn't expect).

The bike has sentimental value for him as the chap who was building it with / for him was a good friend of his who died before he finished it. That said, I think he hates seeing it incomplete and knows he hasn't the time or skill to finish it.

If it sounds like something that would interest you I'd bet that there would be a way to share the bike / project without you parting with any cash. I think he'd like to see it running and used and I'd imagine sharing it with the likes of you wouldn't cause him any pain!

Just a thought. If it sounds like something of interest I'll mention it to him.

Cheers dude. Could be interesting to get involved in, especially as I've changed my plans somewhat drastically.

I've come to the conclusion that a project is fine as a second bike, but I want something I can actually use for distance travel and visiting etc.

To that end, it would seem that a Honda ST1100 Pan European is just what the doctor ordered.

I've just made a tentative offer on a well looked after 1997 model in black.
Only problem might be getting it back down south from Scotlandshire..

That'll be a good shake down run  ;)

No worries chap. Let me know if you still keen after you've sorted out steed one and I'll speak to my mate.

I'm in Manchester. Let me know if I can be of any assistance with the pick-up or on hand with a cup of tea!

Thanks for the kind offers. I have to admit, with my health situation, doing a run like that would be madness.

I've been quoted £250 for it to be collected and delivered to my door, so going to go for that easy option.

I got £100 off the asking price, so that's a good start.

 Hi Brian,

I'd be happy to sell you my ninja. I haven't tried starting it in a few years but if you were interested I could roll it out of the shed and see if it starts. The back brake needs sorting too, but other than that I think it was ok. I can't ride any more due to a fearfull wife.

Hi Olliie. Sorry for taking an age to notice your post- I'm not quite with bike yet. That said, I've paid for it, and it'll be here in a fortnight.

Good luck selling the Ninja. I'm at the point in life where my tiresomely long list of ailments dictates my riding position, and I am no longer Ninja shaped..

Olliie, what sort of money are you looking for?
I wouldn't mind something in the garage to tinker with and ride every so often for the right money.

looking at the prices for these bikes I don't want to price it wrong, but something just below £1000 if it runs and something much less than £1000 if it doesn't run.
If you don't want me to even try starting it then it's yours for probably even less, but you might want to come and look at it first.
I realise that you want it for nothing but a 1999 bike goes for thousands so I had better not just give it away. Hope that seems fair.

Bike arrived on Thursday. I've ridden it all the way down the drive to the garage, where it will sit and gather dust until spring arrives..

Can't comment on it yet, other than to note the very roomy riding position. I've heard nothing but good things about them, and my buddy, who used to own a bike shop, and has done a lot of miles on these, has declared it to be a sound example of the breed.

Not bad for £1500. Plus £275 to ship if down from the "Here be Dragons" part of Scotlandshire..

I had one as a daily ride for a while,  really good bike to get out and about on,  especially 2 up.

I would suggest replacing the rear shock as that made my old one a lot better.

I helped a mate swap the exhaust on one of those once. My god, we had to dismantle practically every piece of bodywork to get to the exhaust because every panel we wanted to remove had at least one fastener hidden by another panel, which had to be removed first. And it, of course, would have a fastener obscured by another panel... Good build quality but annoying.
