Title: Genius product? Or daft idea?
Post by: Raydial on March 29, 2017, 11:37:11 AM
What do you lot make of this? As good as wipers on a visor? Or a valuable extra safety device?

It's a no from me. Even if you roll off the throttle the brake light comes on.

I don't see any real negative to it but it seems to solve a problem that doesn't really exist?

definitely in the wipers on visor category
from my experience never had any issues seeing motorbike brake lights or with anyone else not seeing mine, certainly never had anyone run into the back of me
all issues i have had was with people pulling out in front of me, i would imagine majority of other motorcyclists experiences would be similar

It's a no from me too, I suspect people are more likely to be distracted by it with "why the fuck has that dude got lights on the back of his helmet" moments, but you could argue that makes us more visible. But it's still a no from me.

On the fence...the principal of being highly visible is a plus...maybe it wouldn't need to a brake light...just a high level rear light ...or...maybe it could be a brake light only...and only draw attention when you are braking. So either of these single purposes but not the dual.

I saw a guy riding around in London recently with a flashing red bicycle light stuck to the back of his helmet.

I saw him and thought, "What a twat!" But yeah, your point is valid, I did see him.

I find riding like a twat has the same effect.

Same category as Hi-Viz vests.  Makes sense, but looks a bit daft.
The Hazard light function could have some value if you break down at night I guess, but how often does that happen?  Maybe there's a market for a fold-up LED warning triangle that fits under the seat?
