bit of a strange one , needing to do an oil change on the duke as ive poured most of it over the road , all i can find is everyone online saying it must be fully synth must be fully synth etc , but im always told to follow the manual of which it says and i quote "partially synthetic" the recommend motorex formula 4t as the oil , but is that going to be sufficient giving the type of engine it is?
what im trying to work out is who seems to know best , the people that built it , or every single person that rides one
I would always go semi-synth for road riding.
Even due to the "race" like engine of the KTM? What I mean to say , is there a disadvantage to running fully synth other than the increased cost?
The manual is written by KTM, the bke is biult by KTM, they recommend semi - synthetic therefore use semi - synthetic as that is what KTM - THE DESIGNER AND MANUFACTURER - recommend - simples ;) ;) ;)
Did you say on another thread you were a trained engineer......................................................................... :undecided:

"qualified mechanic"*
(loosely)
ive just checked the service history , main dealer put in completely different oil 10w60 fully synth when should have been 15w50 , and another dealer put in 10w40(has in it at present)
i would always go with what the dealer recommends but when i cant find anyone that actually does go with that recommendation , including main dealers , it makes me want to ask questions
Do you have a owners manual?
If yes use the oil recommended within the Specification page.
What previous buffoons have done should not concern you...you are in a position to right the wrong.
What would you have done if the previous owner had put chicken soup in there instead of oil? Ring a KTM dealer, look at the owners manual, google it, but whatever you do, put what is supposed to be in there, in there.
Was you mechanics course by correspondence with a 'university' in India?

It was not no, I looked onlone first as I didn't realise I had the owners manual

I keep this forum alive! Show some dam respect! And do not post a r.e.s.p.e.c.t meme 😊
I use fully synthetic in all my KTMS. 10-60 on the singles and 10-50 on the twins.
my ktm's manual doesn't state if semi or fully synth
just that it should use 10w50
last lot i bought was fully synth tho
If the Break in period is over Fully Synthetic will be fine.
the conflict im having , ktm swear by motorex
they recommend motorex formula 4t which is a semi
i can get the motorex fully synthetic for same price £11 a litre in the same weight
I know how you should decide...

I thought that as long as it meet the minimum, or stated spec then all was good
I've gone for the recommended one as I managed to get it for £9 a litre from wemoto
I used this for the last few oil changes on the 950sm

It's only oil. Put whatever they sell in Halfords of the right grade from a brand you've heard of in it.

if it was a Honda , i would have...
I'm feeling I should drain the oil cold as I'm not entirely sure how much is left in it as it lost alot , draining cold will still have the same effect just take longer to drain right? It's not something I've really ever done
Top it up....run it...drain it hot.
FFS is this thread still going :azn: :azn: :azn: :azn: :azn: :azn: :azn: :azn:

Every mechanic needs tuition on how to drain oil.

Have you thought about euthanasia?
It's like Toypop has returned tbh
Is this a real person...ALWAYS had my doubts.
It lives!!!!!

Now I've noticed the tyre is a bit low on pressure what should I use ? Nitrogen?

Dynamite...that will blow up any size of tyre.
Only ride it at high altitude
If its the front tyre then it shouldn't matter on that because you should be on the back wheel everywhere... If its the back one then it will just help the wheelies.. job done ;)
Alternatively ride on the rims and save on tyre cost.

Keeping the forum alive!
At what cost?
And by that I mean, the next time you think to yourself "the forum hasn't been posted on in a while, I know, I'll post something obtuse and banal in order to keep it going"....... on behalf of members past and present...... please don't.
Keep it alive, keep it fucking interesting, please.
Time for the reveal...who are you????....remove the Stig helmet and show yourself.
80 percent of how and what I say is for effect , you guys just bite

that's human nature dear boy, of course we'll 'bite', you ask questions; however stupid and someone will answer you. Most of the people who still post on this forum are thoroughly decent chaps and chapettes, if you wish to take advantage of that by trolling, don't then blame them for biting, they're just trying to help and have a bit of fun at the same time.
I won't bite in future, others may.
My parting bite: don't drain cold oil, any particles will remain settled and will simply circulate with your new oil.
Helium would reduce unsprung weight?
Works in party balloons
Putting helium in the front tyre only helps with wheelies if you can't get it up.
The questions you're asking are clearly a pisstake...you claim to have a mechanical background then proceed to ask questions that I would expect from someone who doesn't have a mechanical background.
In Scotland we call this "Taking the cunt"...is that fair comment?

Henceforth known as Forum Thrush.
Annoying cunt.
So in conclusion:
Drain oil when hot and use the recommended semi-synth the book tells you too? Got it. Cheers. :icon_salut:
