Title: Zx6r problem
Post by: SWEENEY on August 21, 2013, 08:13:30 PM
Hiya Ninjas. Took my bike out on my first motorway voyage. The bike lost power and cut out if the revs fell below 3000 it wouldn't go over 60 on full throttle. Any ideas? It's a G2. Also there was a strong smell of fuel, my exhaust wasnt smoking though. Im soooo pissed off. :undecided:

From personal experience, I'd check the carbs and ram air system for any loose/split/disconected hoses. If it ain't that, then you're into coils and dark arts like that.

More smarter folk than me will be along soon..

Sounds like a pipe is off under the tank like the others say

Well. Where do I start. I bought the bike back in March from a private seller in Newport. got it for £1350. It didnt have an Mot etc etc. The guy said it had been sat in his garage for 12 months. The previous MOT's confirmed the mileage and It looked mint, had a custom paint job from Dream Machines in Derby. It started fine with no ominous smoke coming from the pipe. At the time I had no licence/experience with bikes so I was happy to take it without riding it etc. Got it delivered and made a home for it in my garage.
I had the plugs changed, new battery, new air filter, oil filter, oil, coolant, drained the tank. Also had the cdi unit changed as apparently I found out later it was only firing on two cylinders. That was done and the bike was put back in my garage waiting for me to pass my DAS. Took it for an MOT and the garage mechanic said that it was missing and to get new plugs on it. I again bought a new set of plugs with a view to getting them changed when I had 5 mins. That was when the loss of power occured and the strong smell of fuel etc. Took it back to the garage and he took the fuel tank off to get to the plugs, they were all knackered. I then had to fork out for a new ignition coil.....That didnt sort it. Now he's told me to get a new cdi unit and a new stator generator both of which he cant guarantee will fix my problem. Im at the end of my tether, dont want to be throwing money away again. Its a 99 plate and am contemplating sticking it on flea bay for spares or repair.
What would you do??? :(

Do a compression test 1st,if that's ok,check for 4sparks off all leads,if that's ok.get some easy start and spray around that inlet area to see if its sucking in air from somewhere(while the engines running)(revs will rise if air leak)service the carbs and balance them, check ALL the fuel pipes for blockages and drain the tank/check flow from outlet.
Where you too fella?
