Title: sprockets.... uppers downers.....???
Post by: iggy rs on September 26, 2013, 08:32:41 PM
can someone explain in idiot terms what I should be changing the standard sprockets to on a zx9r to gain a bit of acceleration but not sacrifice too much when I'm sitting on the motorway at normal (cough) motorway speeds, spoke to a few people and I just got more confused.

To improve the acceleration you need to lower the gearing. To do this you can either reduce the number of teeth on the front sprocket or increase the number on the rear.
So to pep it up a bit without sacrificing too much top end either go 1 down on the front or 2 up on the back. 1 down on the front is cheap as you will be ok with the standard chain length (2 up on the back will probably also be OK with the standard length chain.
1 down on the front will also be the cheapest option.

those that have altered their sprockets on the 9r site go -1 on the front and +2 on the rear.

I was told that by 2 different people and both contradicted each other lol, one said 1 down 2 up is way to mental for the road and will scream on the motorway but is great for instant silliness, the other said it was good for acceleration but would be fine on a motorway, its a mine field lol, got my new chain sitting here but don't wanna waste a load of money on the wrong sprockets and find out I need to learn how to wheelie very very quickly

I was -1 on front and +1 on rear on my 7R.
Fantastic acceleration.  Tho it sounded like it was revving high on motorways etc.
Found myself looking for another gear most times. Learned to remember what gear I was in to save looking for the 7th gear...

I dont see the problem.

motorbikes are designed to rev high

just remember if you go +2 on the rear you made need a new / extra link in the chain.

personally I went -1 on the front of my blade, great for acceleration and still not bad on motorways.

Not sure which model 9 you have but a 43 tooth rear worked well on my (Gavs...) F2 and fitted with the standard length chain.
