I got one like this:  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorbike-X-Ring-Chain-Cut-Rivet-Workshop-Tool-/360212192686?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item53de51ddae

accept it was only about £30 from 'bits-for-bikes' or something (cant find it now!) and it joined chains just fine, splitting chains however it snapped the bit in the tool really easily unless you ground the head off the chain pin first and replacement bits were £7 each.....

never tried a differant sort, but id say theres got to be ones out there that dont need you to grind the chain first before splitting!

edit: found it, it was one of these..... http://www.bitzforbikes.co.uk/Chain_Cutter_And_Riveting_Tool.-ref-2744-50.html

you should always grind the head off the pins before pushing them out not doing is why you break the tool.

whats the point of a splitter tool if you need a grinder for it to work. mayaswell just cut it off with the grinder like big gav says!

I've been thinking about the same thing. I've got to get my chain off completely and wondered about this.

never bothered with a splitter.. I swear by the hollow link DID chains. Use the DID (or a copy) chain tool and it's foolproof to make a nice neat link and not overtighten it..

+1 - I bought a DID copy tool and there are details on the DID website specifying exactly how far to flare the soft links.
