our wifi upstairs is rubbish was wondering if wifi extenders are any good or am I better off upgrading the router? and do they make them with cable inputs or do you ethernet to the new router.
I've got a Netgear wifi extender. It's got two antenna, so one pick up your existing wifi and the other extends it, so you can double your coverage. Just plugs into an electrical socket. It does use another wireless SSID though so if your wifi ID is XYZ, you will have another SSID called XYZ_ext to connect to.
also used a couple of netgear boosters, cant remember the model no or anything
but got them from maplin
really simple to set up in most cases and do work well
I use power links (ethernet over the power system) for stuff out of the wifi range of the Virgin doohickey

As he said, the netgear one works well for us.
am i right in thinking this is the right one? one plugs into the wall socket and is connected to the router via a cable then the other one plugs in upstairs and uses the house wiring to transfer signal to the extender...?

if you have a wireless router downstairs then better off getting a pure wireless one
you then put it in between current wifi router and where you want it

now back at work and the ones i use are the netgear WN3000RP
The original Virgin Superhub is known for being rubbish on the WIFi front - you could ask Virgin to change it for a Superhub 2 which is supposed to address this issue.

Got my one coming this Friday, thought I'd upgrade as just recieved delivery of a 3TB Seagate wireless HDD for cloud storage, hopefully the boost to the wifi speeds will cope with GB's of photo's being uploaded....
