Anybody got any experience of taking a motorbike into Amsterdam. I'm on holiday on the bike in Europe at the end of August but the last weekend I've got a stag do in Amsterdam and I haven't got time to come all the way home to fly back out.

We are staying in the red light district. It's looking like parking on the street with a chain is unlikely to result in my bike being where I left it by the time I get back to it? There doesn't seem to be a lot of secure carparks in the city (I guess underground parking is not something the dutch go mad for given the watertable?). Bit stuck for ideas.

My plan was to ride into the Dam, park up the bike for a couple of nights then catch the Sunday night overnight ferry from Rotterdam to Hull. Ride back to Manchester from Hull on the Monday. Ferry back is looking like £250 or there abouts. Open to better suggestions.

If yu use the Acacia Hotel in Lindengracht which is about a 10 minute walk from the red light district, I am sure they will let you use the garage.

When I used to arrange the Dutch GP trip they allowed us to park 25 bikes in the garage (it is that big) at no cost, just ask beforehand.  But even if you had to on street park, there is not much of an issue as we had to do this on the last trip I organised.

As a bonus, they have a few rooms which are actually on a river boat.  They are comfortable, roomy and modern apart from which it avoids the need to walk up steep narrow stairs as many of the Hotels are old narrow buildings.

Thanks T.C, useful to know about the on-street parking. Might be my only option.

Unfortunately it's a stag do and I have no say over the hotel which is already booked.

Mulling it over this afternoon I will look and see if I can park at the airport in a secure place. Was thinking it will save me having to carry a chain, will make navigation easy on the way in / out and I can just get transfers into the city.

How nice is the bike? I've been a couple of times and parked on the street with no problems. It was my old J2 though and it was already pretty tatty by then!

Have you tried getting in touch with the hotel and asking them?

komp

some times hotels borrow parking spaces from other larger hotels
first time I went in my shitty pug gti I ended up having to park in a garage of a much swankier hotel down the street full of porsches and ferraris

I have also parked my panigale overnight on in a couple of other cities in holland, not amsterdam mind you.. but with no problems

Some hotels in Europe will let you park for free or will have deals where you get reduced rates at car parks near by.

Cheers Chaps, I'll contact the hotel and see if they have any suggestions - their online reviews suggest that they might not value the hotel part of the business all that highly so not too hopeful.

From what people are saying the on-street idea might well be a go-er in that case. The bike is an 03' GSXR, not likely to be at the top of anyone's theft wish-list is my guess.
