Hmmm that just raises the bar a bit now. If it were clutch I would expect it to do it every time or most of the time I give it some beans, so that aside I don't know what to look for. Chain and sprockets seem to be healthy.

Clutch...fuelling...spark...Big Gav is a mechanic and has loads of knowledge...all I can do is reiterate that what you describe happened to me and it turned out to be a coil pack on No 3 cylinder...junction between coil and HT lead had broken down(Garage speak).

Would the fuel pump play up in all gears under heavy load? Will try and get more info today on the way to work?

Millhouse

had something similar on the B1 at donny.

removed the fuel pump and cleaned the filter in the bottom, and replaced the spark plugs. all sorted afterwards and pulled like a train....
Life is a contact sport,  you'll be needing rule #5

I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be the sidestand switch, it had worn out along the printed circuit.

Well I did the coolant at the weekend and cleaned the rad. While doing that took the coils off and one is definitely rusting along the sleeve and has seen better days another isn't perfect so got two coming by the end of the week and will swap the plugs at the same time then should be ok.

Have you got an alarm/immobiliser on the bike

I had a problem on my sp1 where the bike would be going fine and then splutter and surge, turned out to be the immobiliser contacts cutting the engine, disconnected it and all is fine
