Just bought a new Shoei NXR Shakey Byrne rep lid - looks great.
However, I used to wear an Arai Astro R which was a perfect fit for noise, comfort etc.

Tried the new lid on in the shop, ticked all the boxes but I'm just not getting on with it on the road.
Wind noise seems more excessive then the Arai but this is supposed to be a newer quieter lid, been back to the shop once to check pads etc.
Heading back again to sort out ear/check pads.

Anyone had similar experiences? Do I not have a "Shoei Head"?
I can't return the lid, so I either stick it out or try and flog and lose a lot of money.

Any help, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Fit is everything TBH. I have an HJC and AGV shaped head. Arai and Shoei just feel wrong. If you can't get other inserts to help, then you know the answer to your question.

I think I know the answer, got a few fitting options this weekend to see what happens.

I'm wear my kid everyday commuting so has to be spot on.
How do you find out what shape head you are from fitting in a shop?

Yes, I wear ear plugs and noisier then old lid so something's not right.  I'll keep you all posted and keep suggestion coming.

First time I've heard of a Shoei being noisier than an Arai.

Good luck and great choice. My current number 1 helmet on the shelves.

the nxr is probably flowing more air than your arai which is negating the noise generated by arai's stupid pods, the other thing that springs to mind is that there is probably more of a space between your ears ad the padding than the arai, if you can go to a 5* shoei centre you can probably get a bit of a custom fit support from them to alter that.

Jarse - that's what the boys at bikestop said, shoei's are normally quieter. As I thought my Arai was quiet I was looking forward to the nxr.

Manic, spot on with those two deductions. There does seem to be more space between my ear and aside of the padding, hence more noise. I'll bear with it a bit longer and try to get a more custom fit. The boys at bikestop said that was the next step, to get a shoei chap down and sort me out.

Hopefully it will come good as its a class looking bit of kit.

I'll be looking to replace my existing Hjc carbon lid in a year or so, I really like their next gen one.
The downside is I really like the inner tinted visor system of my existing hjc which these new ones lack.

Snap - I went from an Arai to a Shoei & the noise reduction was great. (as was the visor mechanism)
Tricky one that - could be a number of causes.
Sorry I don't know the exact hat - with it being a race-rep does it have any large moulded-plastic gubbins stuck to the outside? - as I've had experience of them causing noise.

Have you got a chin curtain fitted to it? They make a MASSIVELY difference!
Life is a contact sport,  you'll be needing rule #5

I went from an XR1000 to an NXR this year
Always liked the thou' but the NXR is much lighter, more stable and quieter for me, very impressed
I do have the chin curtain fitted, which the '1000 didn't have, and always use ear plugs

Breath deflector, chin guard both fitted.
Always wear ear plugs.

All the big talk of Shoei being quieter was one of the main reasons I switches. Thought the Arai was quiet so looked forward to this.

I'll give the guys all the feed back and see what happens.

I've got an Arai and a Shoei GT Air and the Shoei is much quieter and more comfortable for long periods of time, the original fitter should have been a little more conscientious with fitting but you are very reliant on feedbac. Hope the guys can sort it because the NXR is a bloody old piece of kit

Went back to the shop today, the NXR has removable ear padding to allow for comms to be put in.
We're putting the noise buffing down to this, they are contacting Shoei Tuesday to discuss and try to get some larger in fills to reduce the gap between my ears and padding.

Worse case I will know up some padding

Manic, the NXR is a very new piece of kit/lid. Not sure what you're thinking of.

Not sure how I missed the auto correct should have said Good lol.  Padding should be easy to sort and hope it solves the issue then you can enjoy shoei ownership
