Title: Cyclist...................
Post by: terry950sm on April 27, 2015, 08:13:57 PM
After Sundays ride-out to North Yorkshire, we encountered a serious amount of cyclist, from novices to club cyclist on a Sunday run.
We tend to ride a lot of B roads, around every corner there seemed to be cyclist. Fat arse novice ones wobbling from side to side, taking up half of the road.
Club cyclist riding in large groups, usually Three abreast, causing us to overtake in some dodgy places.
I don't mind sharing the road with these guys, but they are going to cause some major accidents this Summer.
Thoughts guys, should we just mow the mother fuckers down. ;)

They have just as much right to the road as you do Terry.

I am a cyclist as well as a motorcyclist and a driver of cars - it allows me to relate to all on the road and understand the feelings of all.

3 abreast is not acceptable however.  2 abreast is fine unless on the narrowest if B roads with lots of blind bends.

That's why I put it up on here, as I know a lot on here are keen cyclist.

They just seem to ride with no consideration for others.

Should they wait until they are certain that there is no other traffic about?

Much like many car/bike/lorry/bus riders/drivers/walkers/horsists then.

I normally just announce my arrival loudly and bully them out the way... If it don't have a motor it has no place.......... As my dads been an avid cyclist for the last 60 od years he even admits that the way some of them ride today is bloody dangerous to other road users not so much the fat arse wabbles more the club racers thinking there doing a time trial!

Do they or should they have some type of liability insurance.

Should they also, pay to use the roads, like other road users

No because it's not a legal requirement and vehicle duty is based on emissions not road usage.

Cyclists have a legal right to use the road above and beyond that of a motor vehicle.
It's there's to use.  Your motorbike has to be licenced to be allowed to use it.  The roads would last forever if only cyclists used them so what are you actually saying a cyclist should be paying for exactly?

Quotecausing us to overtake in some dodgy places

No one is forcing you to overtake in dodgy places? Would you overtake a car in a dodgy place? You should be giving the cyclist the same amount of room as you would a car, else you're the one acting dangerously - not the cyclist.

This is exactly correct. Yes there are idiot cyclists, motorbike riders, car drivers, horse riders etc etc etc  but they all have the right to use the roads whether you like it or not. So as always they onus is on YOU to ride/drive safely and WITH CONSIDERATION for ALL other road users.

Blind bend, brow of hill. 40mph faster (National speed limited road). I dont think you have any other option than overtake them.

What about slow down or wait to overtake on a bit of road where you can see what's coming the other way?

Why would you want to put yourself on the other side of the road in any of these circumstances ?. No idea what is coming the other way !

A wonderfully intelligent & well observed way to put it David.

I am cyclist (a bit lapsed now I admit), began as a club cyclist at 14yrs old - doing approx. 300 miles/week for roughly 10 years - then family life stopped that.
At 17 became a motorcyclist too - typical weekend hobby rider - been doing that for 29 years too.
....& of course, passed my car test at 21 & done 100's of 1000's of miles in a tin-top too.

I only witter on like an old bore about my road-use history to make the point that I can see a few sides to this debate (never used a horse on the road I admit)

When I was a teenage road cyclist I thought the world was against us all....no respect from anyone....everyone out to kill us.
Then of course I got into motorcycling and saw another side to it - carving along sensibly on the motorbike around b-roads, only to come across cyclists doing 15mph, taking up the whole road just after a blind bend. Hmmmm....no wonder cyclists irritate folk sometimes - I began to think.

As a motorcyclist,...I needn't mention to you lot the moronic things I've seen from car drivers.
As a fairly "brisk" car driver, I've often been held-up by very steady motorcyclists that utterly potter around bends, holding me up, but will they bugger let me ease past safely on the next straight? - oh no......

....& so it goes.

All things considered though - by far my biggest "deviations" (ahem....) from using the Queens highway for how it is intended, is on my motorbikes.
Yes,....the roads are full of PILLOCK cyclists, half-in-coma car drivers, barely in control of the beast horse riders, & as for tractors! don't get me started......but the inescapable truth of it all is, I've come to appreciate......They are all allowed to be there,...& whatever we're riding/driving....we should try to ride/drive with that in mind.

Everyone on every mode of transport is a total Thwaite.  Whichever mode of transport I use - foot, bicycle, bike, car, tank - the cyclists aggravate me most of all.  Even when I was a regular cyclist up in Cambridge, I hated them the most.

Followed by the pedestrian.

Followed by the taxi driver.

Followed by everyone else.

No problem with them using the road, and cycling is a great way to get around which should be encouraged, but they're all a bit arrogant and cavalier with their lives, and it's everyone else's job to keep them safe.

Broad, sweeping generalisation there, but hey...

Why don't certain car drivers get that they are not entitled to get past people merely because they may want to travel faster than them?

It is incumbent upon the guy behind to find a safe place to pass.

Until there is one, the pass isn't on and you are not in a position to go as fast as you want.

Fucking wait.

And if you can't see a safe pass of a pushbike on a motorbike, you certainly shouldn't be passing!

I had mainly lost my rag with some of the stupidity I read in this thread. I decided I couldn't even be bothered to respond, let alone read the rest.

This post made me happy I did. Spot on Whoopee.

What I would add is this - you can bang on about people being in your way and 'asking for an accident' as much as you want and see how good being angry makes you. But it will be a different matter when you're explaining to a judge how you decided to stick to the maximum speed limit round a blind bend over a blind summit and collected a cyclist because you were riding too fast to stop for a common and predictable hazard!

Thanks for kind responses folks.

I feel like rather a hypocrite in some ways as I certainly have done my (un)..fair share of using the roads to play on at less than legal speeds.

Thing is I'm reaching the point where its getting easier for me to admit that I've been an irresponsible tit on many occasions - I'm sharing these roads with people who have their children in the car & just want a nice drive out on a sunny weekend.

My sons just bought an old srad & we plan to share it on a few trackdays this year,......so I hope to do my best to save most of my "really enthusiatic" riding for the track where it really does belong.

Peace & love :-)

I cycle a bit and ride motorbikes, drive plenty of miles in the car and a few in the van.
As many have said cyclists can use the road just like anyone else but there is a line where it starts to become disrespectful.

I normally go out cycling with 5 or 6 others and on quieter roads we sit 2 abreast and drop back to single file when there are cars behind, to make it easy and safer to be passed.

The local cycling club think they are the f***ing Tour de France... 3 abreast and about 60 riders so the f***ing 'peloton' is a fair old length. I dunno why they do it like that, I think riding in such close proximity in such a large pack would be a fairly shit way to spend my time, not to mention how much I would like to not have to cycle along the white line being exposed to oncoming traffic!! Mental if you ask me. Anyhow, that's how they do it on twisty A and B roads. So cars, vans, lorries, can sit behind them for 8-10 miles. I think that crosses the line to being a nuisance and can understand drivers having their buttons pressed when they have to sit at 15mph, a pretty tedious speed, for mile after mile.

Keeping everyone happy on the roads requires some compromise from everyone and I think some cyclists feel they shouldn't have to compromise at all. Cars etc need to give cyclists some space and respect, but equally cyclists need to respect the fact that cars etc will want to get past. So they should take that into consideration plan accordingly.

Agree with a lot of this. Only go 2 abreast anymore is stupid and takes a full lane. Single file if appropriate.

Also, cyclists that have no insurance cover of any type at all should not be allowed on the road. This includes contents insurance or specific cyclist insurance. I got stung when a cyclist hit me, denied all responsibility, in the wrong with a independent witness etc 5k of damage!

I know there are exceptions, but as a rule cyclists are a threat to no-one and I'm pretty sure statistically they cause some less than fuck all accidents.

In fact I'd go so far to say that motorists attitudes to cyclists would be even worse if they thought there might be an insurance claim in it.  They'd be a soft target in every sense of the word.

Can we return to irrationally and unfairly berating car drivers instead?

A small minority of car drivers are impatient, selfish, self-important, down-right dangerous wankers when I'm on my push bike.

And cyclists share a number of inherent vulnerabilities with bikers.

Let's have some solidarity with our two-wheeled cousins.
