Title: So the R1 sale proved to be unnecessary.....
Post by: MOzZereLLa on May 17, 2016, 07:51:25 PM
In the end, selling the bike expecting a requirement for about £5k in pocket to go towards expected work on a house we wanted to buy was a bit galling.

Even more so when the work on that house actually amounts to £25k+ and the situation is as good as dead in the water.

Add to that the great weather we've had in the last 2 weeks and I'm pretty pig sick.

The only way to solve that is to buy a new toy. I think I want to go naked again. Road riding a Superbike missile is a waste of time to be honest.

Shortlist is as follows. Really not sure which way to go.

Almost certainly in red with a full Arrow Ti system. Let's face it, white is a girl's colour.

Loved my old one but can't afford the new one so not sure if the "old" model is worth the cash.

Or a bit of a left field choice (I hate the way it looks) but the engine is awesome and the reviews are v favourable.

Not sure where else to go? Happy for thoughts / banter.

Its got to be the red S1KR. Not that I'm biased in any way.:)

It's a great selection to pick from...not a bad one there...and you have had experience of them all in one guise or another.
The Speed Triple feels taller in comparison to the S1000r...an observation not a criticism.
Haven't ridden the Yamaha but not a fan of the Crossplane engine...but we all differ.

The S1000r has its flaws...but as a package I have gelled with it immensely...there is nothing currently on the market I would swap it for...and that's a first for me in a long time.
But as said it's a great trio to choose from...so whatever one you do choose will not disappoint.

White is way quicker....fact.....and yes I seen the White girly comment...Red is for men who like other men...double fact

A word of caution...if you do decide on an S1000r the Forums and my very own dealer will tell you woes of full exhaust systems...it messes with the low down fuelling and all seem to struggle to get the bike rideable in anything but full throttle...which makes a great bike shit.

Not with a power commander and custom map fitted I'd suggest.

Apparently not...one in my dealer is getting returned to standard as the bloke has tried everything...and has given in...S1000r Forum folks had woes too...but haven't visited in a while as the Americans took over and spoke more shite than I could handle.

Interesting but so can't figure out why that would be the case.

My S1RR 2012 with a PCV and custom map was superb. Maybe it's a result of the detune.

As much as I love the Yam I'm not sure I could live with its looks.

I get on well with the mechanic bloke...so next time I'm up I'll ask what the issues are...it maybe the Forum could provide an answer...but it is full of Americans looking for 800bhp and a 0-60 time of less than the Speed of light.

I think most of the issues were when people were using full systems with short end cans. Those that ran full systems with long cans didn't seem to be having as many problems, or ones that couldn't be sorted with pc5 or reflash.
Not been on the forum for a few weeks myself so not sure what the latest is.

Is it still as shit...I couldn't be arsed listening to all those weekend warriors that modded every single bit of the bike for cheap tat.

Added to that the long Cans look fucking hideous...about 8 feet long from memory.

I've had it a few weeks and so far it's a love / hate relationship so far. Some days I think it's the best bike I've ever ridden while on other days I think it's been a waste of £15k......it might be just a bit too focused for a road going naked as it's basically a big bore RSV4 with upright bars. It would work really well on track but that's missing the point of the bike really.

Wish I'd tested both it and a S1000R first............it looks good though.

Took me time to gel with the R...a year in and it just gets better...the suspension is working better than ever...a very confidence inspiring bike.
Hopefully time will have you feeling the same way.

Yeah did that...it hasn't been shit as such...just more recently with 6k on the clock it feels better...bedded in...even the odd sensation from the Slipper clutch has gone...everything just seems settled in nicely.

Front sag was within tolerance from factory...rear took a bit of time...only due to the fact you have to turn the adjustment Rod more than you would ever imagine...but it does get there.

Yip....sounds like the camchain rattling ( not saying that's what it is...only that it sounds like that)...lasts for about 0.3 of a second and clears...Tucker on here is on his 3rd RR...his first two were 20k plus bikes...current on 10k...and all his bikes have made this noise...
Only really audible in the first start up of the day...possibly the camchain tensioner is worked by oil pressure...guessing here....but as the saying goes..."they all do that Sir"

Mine has the startup noise as well. But as Alzo says only seems to be the first start of the day. Was a bit worrying at first but now I'm used to it I hardly notice it.

Not got round to setting the sag on mine yet, but cant say I have any complaints about it. Might get round to setting it this summer.

The sag is worth doing...you'll probably find the front is within the 6mm_10mm movement...the rear is set soft...so doing the rear definitely has the effect of the front and rear working better together...get a socket on a ratchet...because you will not believe how much it needs winding in to reach the desired movement..22mm -24mm from memory...ideally an assistant who is used to reading measuring tapes.

Was in the local BMW Motorrad dealer this morning and was looking at the S1000XR.

Dealer said the demo's not booked, take it out for a hour if you like, so I did so.

Really liked it.

Very fast. Easy to ride. Comfortable. Up and down the box quick shifter was neat.

Sorely tempted.

Its a shame the XR and RR QS doesn't get put onto the R.  I'm sure it would be an easy retro fit?

Standard small screen it's crap...as you would expect...I have a MRA Double Bubble screen and it's good for high speed runs. Tried an XR today and wind protection wasn't what you would think. Cars are better. 😉

Funny that both of us were out on an XR today!

I was really impressed with that engine.

Really fast.

Suddenly realised the Triumph Tiger 800 is pedestrian...

Wish I'd tested one of these before I bought it...

Would be a crazy move financially to change it after only 8 months, but I'm thinking about it!

I had email from local dealer offering...so took it as one does...great machine...but the R I have is a Sportsbike with straight bars...and as much as I try I'm not ready to give that style of bike up...Maybe in three years...but right now the aggressive nature of the R suits.
Title: Re: So the R1 sale proved to be unnecessary.....
Post by: tucola on May 22, 2016, 04:54:03 PM
I largely agree with that and if it was just for fun the S1000R would be fine.

But I need a bike for the daily commute year-round on SE England rush hour motorway and through Central London and the XR would make more sense for that, while still being stupidly and unnecessarily fast.

I was quite impressed with it.

I find myself saying this a lot...purely because it's true..."there isn't a bad bike out there...all as quick as us mere mortals need"...I like the planted feel from the front of the XR...despite being taller with more travel it still inspired great confidence....and you're 100% correct...it would be a Hyper commuter.

Yip...between 4-5k a definite vibe...not as unbearable as reports would suggest in my opinion...but that's an hours test ride...maybe a longer period would have me tolerating...or loathing...it did demonstrate to me how smooth the same engine is on my R.

Hadn't particularly noticed unreasonable vibes on the test ride.

Then again, you don't notice such things when you're just hooning around for an hour or so...

Something I'd have to look into should I decide to progress this.

How're you getting on with the GS?

The GS is almost my perfect motorcycle. At 125bhp it lacks just a *little* bit of power, but the way it delivers it is nice. The comfort is second to none and I love the fact it is a real do it all machine.
I could sit on it all day and not get tired - sounds cliché but it really is true!

Saying that, would love a go on an Africa Twin :)

Sounds great!

Can definitely see myself owning a GS one day.

Everyone comes around to them in the end it seems.

I shall be picking up an Explorer in the next week or 2, my body is telling it's that time for it lol

Tuc - how goes the Tiger 800?

2016 mate, the XR base model but having heated grips, hand guards and a top box fitted :)

Fecking lovely that  the seats on those Explorers are by far the comfiest I've ever parked my arse on. The new 2016 models are big improvement on the previous years I hear too.

Any touring planned?

I test rode the previous model and my only complaints were the brakes were a bit "meh", which should now be sorted with the Brembo's. Other than that I bloody loved it!

None official but I definitely plan to do some miles on it!

QuoteTuc - how goes the Tiger 800?

It's a good bike.

But you can't do a lane at the weekend for fun on it in anything other than perfectly dry conditions without knobbly tyres, and those would ruin it for the motorway commute so would be a non-starter. If we lived in Spain with lots of gravel fire roads, would be a different proposition, but 90/10 road tyres on a heavy bike are totally hopeless in mud.

And ultimately it's not that exciting as a road bike, because it's not that powerful and (even though it's better in this respect than the XR) it's not got enough ground clearance, the right tyres, or the right sort of front end, to really handle.

I'm starting to wonder whether the fairly limited potential green lane ability was enough of a reason to go for it over a pure road bike, that would do everything except the laning better.

Still, it did the job of getting me to work all through the Winter in total comfort and reliability, so it's not bad by any means.

Just getting a little bored of it, perhaps, now the roads are dry.

Other problem is that this is my first year commuting to work every day on the bike. Much more miles on the bike and just getting bored of it for that reason, whereas for all previous years of my life, just getting on any bike and riding was enough of an occasion to be enjoyable.

Might have to get an H2 for the Summer just to wake myself up a bit on the M1.

Considering the shit reason I found myself bikeless (in hindsight, a little bit of a reactionary sale) I finally took delivery of the replacement on Friday.

Managed a few miles yesterday and zero regrets. What a magnificent motorcycle - as I have read many times, possibly all the bike you'll ever need. All I've done is changed the end can (the Austin makes it sound a little gruffer and pops / crackles nicely on changes and overrun).

Alzo has his rainbow painted (a bit gay pride for my liking ;) ) der halter - ladies and gentlemen, in the spirit of its cutting edge tech, howling soundtrack and undoubted speed I give you (inspired by the ME262) the Sturmvogel.

Nice :)
Make sure you set the sag. I did mine this week and did a 250 odd mile ride out yesterday and it has made it even better than it was. Wish I had done it sooner.

Oh I was out with a white one yesterday and the red ones are definitely faster ;)

It I could have chosen a colour it would have been red, but this was the best one out there for price, spec etc (I wanted cruise for commuting).

Suspension felt very good so I might be lucky with the sag. I'll have a look at that soon but I'm a bit short on manpower to do it alone.

By all means bring your red one to Wales and we'll test the fast theory.

The grey panels need changing.

They'll either be the MY16 black ones or some used carbon ones.

Nice bike Moz. Exactly the model I'm also looking at if / when I get a job..

I did test ride an MT10 a week ago.. I know it's irrelevant now you got your R but here are my thoughts on the MT10..

TO start I'm also a bit meh on the looks but do quite fancy the night fluro version for my sins..  as for riding well it's the first time I've ridden a cross plane crank motor and I have to say it suited the naked style of bike very well once all the electronic gismos were turned down or off. Traction control on the highest setting was just plain annoying killing the power at the slightest lift of the front wheel..  which happened a lot..  There are three engine modes, standard, A and B. I believe that mode A is the 'race' mode as it were but the throttle was very snatchy as it's expecting you to go WOT immediately as soon as you roll the throttle and round town it was horrid but in standard mode it was fine and in the real world not hugely noticeable difference IMO..  but I only rode it for about 30 mins..

Compared to my FZ8 obviously it was a rocket ship but overall it felt really solid IMO..  Only negative for me were the all digital dash, I like a clock style rev counter and the seat..  it's basically a race rep seat and it's so hard, just ridiculous to fit it to this bike..  There is a 'comfort' seat option and I imagine they will be selling a lot of them..

I am yet to ride the S1000R but once I sort out my employment status I will try and ride them back to back but I did love the cross plane motor and it sounded amazing with the Akropovic can...  and I cant see the bike when I'm riding it..  lol..

Great to hear your thoughts.

I suspect a remap would sort the snatchy throttle out. I'll try and ride one next year because as awesome the S1000R is, the engine is banzai but characterless. It's the only negative for me.

Post by: Tiiimmmaaayyyy on June 28, 2016, 04:38:22 PM
Genuine question, what would make the engine have more character? More defined step in power like a two stroke? More grunt?
Title: Re: So the R1 sale proved to be unnecessary.....
Post by: MOzZereLLa on June 28, 2016, 04:50:22 PM
I prefer the extra grunt (but maintained Rev-ability if that's a word) of the cross plane crank.

The normal 4 doesn't have that (has always seemed too clinical to me, but that's not a bad thing).

I don't agree with the Cross plane engine having character...for me it was sterile...devoid of any feeling...it numbed the senses. The S1000r screams and keeps on giving...pure character. Fact. 😉

Yes a remap would be on the cards at some point if I was to push the button.. and an exhaust and de-cat for that ultimate experience..  The engine feel on the R is the thing that will probably lean me towards the MT10 but obviously only riding one will answer that for me. The only thing you can add to an IL4 is noise IMO but the cross plane motor just had something for me..   hhmm  need a job..

I wasn't over keen on the one you fitted to your R1 - but it did grow on me - however that one for the MT10 doesn't do anything for it at all. It would look better with a full length link pipe and can imho.

interesting read in MCN doing a shoot out between MT10, S1000R, Tuono etc, and the comments they made about the S1000R motor..

if you haven't read it they placed the MT10 second behind the Aprilia but above the S1000R..

Not being defensive...but it's the same pattern when a new bike comes on the scene...when the S1000r hit our shores it blew everything away. The Speed Triple was the best...and so it goes on...these features need to be taken with a pinch of salt...they write what comes up their humph...Performance Bikes are the worst...they declared the new Speed Triple as "Bike of the year"...then said the M10 was the bike to have...twats.
The performance on all of these bikes is close enough to allow each of us to find one that suits us best...ride them all...form your own opinion...then buy and enjoy...I wouldn't part with the S1000r for any other bike out there....suits ME as much as I need.
