Title: Middle-weight, non-super sport bikes
Post by: Gilby104 on December 09, 2013, 03:45:24 PM
Bouncing off another thread that talked about whether super-sports bikes are for the road (and following the sale of the Daytona) I have been getting seriously itchy about not having a bike.

Problem is my debt clearance is going pretty well and I can't afford to pile back into a shed load of debt to have the bike I really want (the Daytona I just sold). I have previously had an SV650 which I absolutely loved. The smiles for miles was great.

I was thinking about getting something around £1500-£3000 mark where I can get a sorted, middle of the road bike with low miles that I can just have fun on. Needs to be quick enough, handle well enough and not be stone faced ugly. I'd look at another SV650 but I can't find one like I had and the ones on sale all seem hideous (can't stand the S version) and have clip on bars, which, for the SV turns it from a fun bike into a bore!

What do you reckon?  :moto:

You won't lose money:

incidentally, take it from someone who's widely regarded as the most naturally gifted motorcycle rider the world has ever seen.... id est.... me...... the 749 is the most complete out of the box bike ever produced in terms of handling..... they are sublime.

The title states non super-sports bikes - correct me if I'm wrong (and I never fucking am) but the 748, 749 and to a lesser extent, the Thundercat are FUCKING SPORTS BIKES.......

I was going to go for a slightly politer version or this..... "why can't you lot get in your heads that I just don't want a fucking sports bike.... deal with it".... but beaten to the punch.

The Ducati's are seriously tempting but I just can't do it to myself. I am not mechanically or electrically tuned in enough to ride such a ticking time bomb and the fear of unreliability would be enough to ruin it for me. If I was going to go back to a sports bike I think I'd have to accept the debt and go back to a daytona or probably the CBR600RR.

Problem with the Thundercat and the CBR600F (both of which I like and wanted - have had a 600f) is that they are still a bit too sporty as Moz says but also at that budget they are often starting to get a bit tired and if anything is scarier that going too fast on a sports bike its going too fast on one that isn't as happy as it used to be doing it.... my old CBR was a bit of a shed to be fair but riding it inspired no confidence at all.

It's not comfort I am looking for necessarily just a cheaper fun riding experience.

I like the MT09 but it's too expensive by quite a way, as are the Triumphs. The Kwaker is not for me at all.

What would be the best bet for a supermoto in the price range above?

The BMW... absolutely not!!

Neil I have ridden the Honda equivalent and it was a shed load of fun.... I'm just not sure I could part with my hard-earned to buy a 125 4 stroke. Would be next to useless if I wanted to go on a big ride or abroad etc and I am sure I would get pretty frustrated with the lack of guts in no time at all.

The Hornet is winning at the moment from what I have seen - but the supermoto might be a new avenue!

This is the first reasonable alternative to the Hornet I have found (road legal, good nick, not silly money etc)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KTM-520-EXC-ORANGE-SUPERMOTO-/111234816828?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item19e61c9b3c

I do wonder whether it would be a better bike to own for a Sunday blast. Sure as hell no good for touring and long trips!!

Mk2 SV650 would get my vote. :moto:  The ER6 Ray hired for the Memorial Rideout was a cracking bike too, as is DaveH's. :moto:  Could not believe how swift off the mark they were and I was on a 1050.  :moto:

I'm guessing the ER6 would cost more than a like for like SV ? :moto:

Speed Four sounds a blast  :moto:

Looks like someone has had the lights off it and put the bracket back on upside down, or done it on purpose to close the gap to the clocks.

EVERY time I have riden Amy's 125 I have got off it grinning me tits off...it really is such a hoot to ride, and a real refreshing change from big capacity bikes.  Sure it lacks power, but it is sooooo light and flickable.  Not every ride needs to be doubling the speed limit everywhere.

I am infact thinking of adding one to my stable to commute on and generally hoon around on at a pathetically low cost.

That 520 is old technology and he is asking top money for it.
