Tyres / Re: anyone fit their own tyres?
March 21, 2023, 08:37:45 AM
been changing my own tyres for a couple of years ... paid for itself in a few months

OLMAXMOTORS tyre changer is my tool of choice.. and a small compressor to bead the tyres
nothing touches the rim, i've never marked a rim.. (one set of my wheels are carbon)

on a trackday i can pop tyres off and on quicker than walking to the tyre man

QuoteOn the top of the carbs, there are 2 small pipes which run off into the Ram Air and air vacumb sysem. One of the pipes wasnt seated properly.

I was amazed that a 8mm air pipe would cause such a significent problem but it did.. I just re-attatched the pipe and it was fine..

I'll be doing my first trackday in 9 years this year on my MT.  Hopefully the TC will stop me launching it!

on track you will see more and more see people learning to lean on the electronics .. fair play to them ... and then boom.. it highsides, just the same as any bike .. normally worse.. the rider has really over stepped the mark to get it so wrong... and they have no idea what happened ....

tempted to upgrade to something with electronic wizardry ... but realistically it makes no different to the fun factor for me ...  the most fun is had riding with your mates in a safe environment (and trusting each other enough to not take each other out) .. buy the bike that enables this...

the later generation bikes might make playing easier .. but they are expensive to put on track, expensive to get parts for, so expensive to repair .. a few more years and it'll hopefully be time to buy one, when they become cheap.. if they ever do...
(as an example replacement '12 s1000rr clocks still £450 2nd hand.. and then they need coding...and bmw only like to code the £800 clocks they supply..shocking)

we are all getting older, all have more money for our hobbies, and more and more people only riding on track.. so buying better trackbikes.. the current r1 is a complete weapon on track

depending on your definition of trackbike, to me.. its a bike that allows me to play with my friends in a safe environment, but more importantly.. i won't cry if it goes down the tarmac..
(then just needs track focused tyres (and quality tyre warmers.. those 2 laps each session warming your tyres soon add up), suspension sorting, quality race pads, quality brake fluid, engine covers..  then maybe a brembo master cylinder, quick action throttle, hm quickshifter, gear indicator (if it doesn't have one), rearsets, exhaust system, some carbon, a useful steering damper, a slipper clutch that works)
but really ... just track focused tyres and suspension would be enough

last month i turned on racechrono in the pits at snetterton and it must of picked up at least 6 bluetooth gps devices ... and you see more and more starlane and aim solo fitted to bikes... granted some people are timing for fun... only a handful take it too seriously

any how... let me tell you a story :
there was this chap, back in the early days of mcnninjas (maybe even when it was on msn) posted a lot, some say everyday.. a super active poster, used to do a few trackdays back in the day when people still rode to trackdays ... had a blue fireblade  (954 ? power of a modern tuned 600 ? but heavier .. if any bike needed electronics this was it.. it was scary opening the throttle ;) )... and then he brought a honda v-twin thingy (the bike honda built to win world superbikes, in 2000 it did, by Haga being disqualified for a drug that naturally occurred some herb... in 2002 it won fair and square  :moto:) ....  he gave loads of advice over the internet about bikes, was a knowledge chap .. in the words of bertie  :police:, didn't post 'shy and boring' posts .. he hadn't done a trackday in 9 years .... brought a lovely MT roadbike ... stands it on some lovely gee tech stands in the garage .... looks a bit like Johnny 5 .....
;)

what do you think of the story so far ...

The 'problem' seems to be that people are using late generation 1000cc bikes with all their lovely electronic aids to prevent you launching into the scenery.
Depends how worried you are about winning the Inters group? :)
How 'very dare them', ride a bike with electronics making their experience safer.
Really not sure I see the 'problem' ?

Got a nice b1h going cheep ..... Well sorted for track....
possibly the most expensive b1h listed on the uk interweb
(granted.. it has some nice bits... you know you should sell the nice bits separately put back to standard where possible and reduce the price of the bike)

I was thinking maybe another 4c8 r1 as I like the idea of being able to jump off the road bike onto the same model trackbike..

do it ... i'm clearly not bias ...

your timing sucks balls... last week i sold my spare set of 4c8 track fairings .. ( and they were blue/black :( )

after tracking coxy's gsxr1000 for a few years, I went down this route... 4c8 for the road and 4c8 for the track...
I pretty much stopped road riding in 2013 .. my road 4c8 has spent most of its life sat in the garage
(although I did commute on it last year... got unlucky.. got pulled , got lucky, had to do the ride course (again  :undecided:))

i've been meaning to pop over to catch up.. but you know how slack i am .. just been busy :(
(last time I saw you I was changing jobs.... since then i've changed jobs again ... congrats on your new position too  )

anyways.. since giving up road riding and 100+ trackdays later... I'm really no quicker  :undecided:
(maybe a little, on a good day ;))
Just enjoy the time on track with some mates, Your mentality to track changes the more you do

Would be good to see you out on track again ...  got the following booked for the rest of the year (so far) :
April 19th - Bedford ( has spaces )
May 24th - Cartagena 3 days ( has spaces )
Sept 27th - Aragon 3 days ( event has been full a while )
Nov 30th - Almeria/Andalcia/Espana - 4 days  ( has spaces )

Will be doing some trackdays in june/july/august  ;)..
(possibly sneak in another euro   :moto: )

you will generally have fun with whoever is on the same cc of bike
all my trackday buddies ride litre bikes (cbr1000rr,gsxr1000,s1000rr,zx10r,rsv4,rc8 etc)
playing on track with a random trackdayer is good fun, playing on track with your mates is even better
most euro tracks will benefit from a litre bike imo

do it

Cheers for the replies team. I shall ponder my next move!

some of it will come down to what your mates are doing
i have a group of mates that i regularly do track days with, normally 1 or 2 trackdays a month with a couple of euros thrown in

giving up road riding has not been such a big deal.. and i don't miss it now (did at first)...
last time i rode on the road i did not really enjoy it.. trackdays have ruined road riding for me

Have done a very wet Cartagena to start the year off!!

i was there too... thankfully the 2nd and 4th days kinda made up for day one... (if only we booked the 3 day event directly after.. 3 days of good weather) .. .first day we didn't get out.. 2nd day was good but my bike ran like sh*t.. day 3 changed spark plugs..bike fixed  :moto: .. day 4 was excellent (how cartagena should be)

aragon in may
portimao in september
alcarras in october
(tempted by folembray august bank holiday, just for the crack)
the 'new' pembrey has got to be worth a weekend away

a few uk trackdays here and there (ie as many as i can get away with)

If your referring to the Eurotrax one in August its always a hoot :-)

yeah, with steve and co.. went to croix, mettet and folembray a couple of years ago

What colour is the hm switch ? Black is normally a hm pc ... not the stand alone unit (hm plus..red)

From memory the hm display comes on with just the ignition so you can adjust the direction and sensitivity (also has the option for killtime.. which do nothing). Without the engine running.. i'll check tonight for you

Assume you want to sell the hm ? I'm after another hm pc... pm want you want for it

had to de-rust the inside of the tank on my trackbike last year
vinegar/coke didn't work, electrolysis did :)

1. remove the pump
2. mix soda crystals with water (to create an electrolyte) - got the soda crystals from local morrisions
3. fill tank with electrolyte
4. place iron rod into the solution via the fuel pump hole
The iron rod can't touch the tank. So a bit of electrical tape to insulate it round the pump hole.
5. Connect a 12v battery (or even a battery charger)
Positive to the iron rod
Negative to the tank
Every few hours take the iron rod out and clean it up. I changed the electrolyte a couple times so it was easier to see how things were progressing.
Once the bubbles stop, there is no longer a chemical reaction.

Do this in a well ventilated area. I did mine over a weekend.

plenty of youtube videos of the process

the rust in my tank was caused by fuel foam baffles.. at the top of the tank by the filler

take the pump apart and clean the tea bag filter and all will be good

a mate had a 1st gen one fitted to his gsxr6 when they were first released
(1st gen only works with android, 2nd gen work with iphone too)

hes never had an issue and it works well
hes just removed it from his gsxr6 and moved it to a gsxr1000 for this year

adjusting your quickshift settings from your phone is most certainly 'gucci'

another mate had a hm superlite fitted to his 04 zx10r... worked perfectly
although after the gearbox ate itself (unrelated to the quickshifter)
moved the superlite to a yamaha r1 4c8 ... and it simply doesn't work very well on his 4c8 (standard rearsets)

m6rk, another option for you would be a 'hm pc' connected to the ecu
