just been checking my bike over noticed the chain seemed a bit slack so i adjusted it this was done on the side stand everything seems to be correct wheel alighnment etc just wondering what play it should have ive measured it and there is 1 inch of play is that too tight any info would be great thanks

Depends on the bike - I'd download a copy of the manual and see what it says.

The recommended play on my R6 is larger than it was on the J2!

It varies from bike to bike. My gixxer is 30mm but the beemer says 40-50mm which seems really slack to me. What bike is it? I tend to measure with a ruler rather than rely on the swingarm markings which can be out a bit.

I've always gone by the rule that if it moves about an inch that's about right..... but I'm no mechanic!

I might be wrong but I was under the impression that the chain slackness should be measured with you sat on it - also, if you've adjusted it on the side stand make sure it doesn't alter drastically once you move the bike.

The general rule is an inch of play

that's what i thought i am not a heavy person i weigh about 11 stones so i wouldn't have thought the chain would tighten much more with me sat on it

The manual should tell you the conditions for testing eg with the bike upright/on the stand/loaded/unloaded

I go between 25mm and 35mm at the slackest point on the underside of the swingarm.. it helps once you have found it to use an indelible marker on the swingarm so you can find this point easily again.

I've never had a bike yet that needs to be loaded to set the tension.

That reminds me, must do mine. Just shy of 9k and 6 years and I've not done it once. Is this bad????
