Need to do an oil change on the kids PW50.

Manual says to use 10w30 but I have aloud of 10w40 kicking about from my track bike.

That'll do won't it?

Small engine...so thinner oil is better...heats up quicker...offers less resistance to moving parts.

10w40 will be fine in the summer, come to think of it, I think it will be fine full stop on a 2T as it is only used in the gearbox. Heavier oil means it will protect the transmission a bit better in hotter weather.

not quite, multi grade oils change viscosity as the temp varies so a 10w30 has the viscosity of a 10w oil when cold and a 30w oil at thep. So using the 10W40 is probably OK but once the engine is at temp the oil is effectively thicker (40w), it's a small engine so will have small/narrow oil passages so may not be a good idea to use it.

Manufacturers recommend certain grades for a reason.

PW50 is a four stroke I believe

As I eluded to...thicker so smaller engine can do without the additional resistance how ever little we perceive that to be.
