What is the deal with variable speed restrictions on motorway gantries, specifically M1 between Junction 9 and the M25 at 6A.

Are they supported by cameras (there would appear to be camera signs and lines on the road...) and are these on?

Or are they essentially treatable as 'advisory' only?

People seem to fly through them with abandon, notwithstanding that they might be showing 60 or 50 or whatever...

I heard that the ones on the M25 are NOT on and that would seem to be support by people's attitude towards them.

But wouldn't want to make an expensive error here...

they only appear fit cameras to some of them
was on the top 1/2 of M25 at weekend, saw probably only 3 or 4 gantries that actually had cameras fitted to them
the rest were empty and just the signs
i must admit slowed a bit under the ones with cameras, but not everybody did

Only some gantries have the cameras (you can generally see them on approach) and only some of those are turned on. They quite often give you a free pass on the first one from what I've seen.

But speeding through them is Russian roulette. Seen people flashed and know people who have been booked.

I wouldn't.

I got flashed twice by them doing 89 never did receive anything in the post. But got me worried so
Now on the motorway it's 75 on cruise control

Some sections of the M25 have been fitted with speed cameras not exclusively linked to variable limits or gantreys.
