Old school engine...belts driving camshafts....so they need replacing at correct intervals...you really want a dealer serviced bike...and they are out there.

to have one kept at the flat ( so I can use it everyday with ease) it needs to be able to ascend stairs, which the 640 did in spades

I'm keeping my eyes open for a 690 locally and I wouldn't mind a 950 its definitely a contender

I just feel that's a lot more money for a bike with the exact same engine than the bike I just sold

You will be pushed to purchase a decent 690smc for 3k.
But you will probably purchase one for 2.5k and spend 2k putting it right. 

well ended up spending a lot less than I expected she will do for now.....

They do not have a good reputation

When they briefly went bust they had a few issues so I've heard but it hopefully is not one of the cheaply built ones.
