quality is defiantly on par (feel , lining etc) with my old suomy spec 1R which wasnt cheap , and id say exceeds my old agv ti tech , both wore top end helmets in there range , my current helmets are a bell m5x carbon and an agv compact , and its easily comparable , if it had agv or arai on it and wasn't pretending to be a £1000 helmet i wouldn't bat an eyelid at it

it exceeds all the required standards , its not ACU recognised however , and gets 4/5 for Sharp
So it wouldn't qualify for Track use without ACU accreditation...I now wonder if that because it would fail to meet their standards...or it was never intended for our market.

Could be that ACU accreditation is what we all use and might be expensive to obtain.

I'm still open minded

Take a punt.... Dare ya

It imagine it may very well be , which wouldn't factor into the price , however I've just found out that anyone can send a helmet to ACU(according to web) and if it meets standards they will certify it (put a sticker on it)

Spoke to a mate that's had alot to do with ACU over the years and I asked the question and said it could very well be down to the fastener , when I said it wasn't d ring closure

Nah...a few Shoei are seat belt buckle type and meet ACU accreditation.

I did think some did but wasn't sure

I remember the shit storm created when the SHARP ratings came out . As it did show that the big boys were ripping us off regarding cost for a lid being beaten in a standardadised test v some "cheaper" models.

I have a AGV K3 Guy martin replica got it at the London show and at a bargain price. can't fault it . probably the best lid I've owned.

Fastas......

I've never bought a mega bucks lid. But I've never gone dirt cheap either. My last 3 have been bought at the London show, all branded (2xAGV and a Shark) and been cheaper as they're deemed old design and model.

When Scarface had his accident, he was wearing a cheapie. As he hit the ground, the impact forced the strap through the fastening enough for the lid to come off. This meant 10 days in a coma, 14 days in ITC and months of neuro rehab, quite apart from having to have parts of his face reattached after they were semi ripped off by the strap. Ok, so this was a few years ago, but it's a definite no from me. When you see your own son (or wife/girlfriend in this case) laying in the road, blood pissing from head wounds, looking like they're dead, it kinda concentrates your mind a tad

I'd include AGV and Shark in the type of lid I'd happily wear without a doubt.

It's these clearly bollocks cheap shit helmets that wouldn't get the time of day from me for the reasons Fastas lists above.

I don't care what others say - you generally get what you pay for and £30 for a lid (even if it's discounted from £80, although I doubt it was ever that price really) is fit for fuck all. I wouldn't even plant flowers in one.

shit lids exist fact , seen more than a few ,but that however does not mean all cheap lids are unsafe or poor quality , there is no real reason why arai can warrant a supremely higher price tag other than "top racers wear our lids be like them" im not saying all cheap lids are safe or good value but we shouldnt discount these brands , as far as im aware sharp tests are quite extensive and dont lie , check there sight im sure your find 1 star lids that cost more than what ive posted , those are the dangerous ones

I look at it the same way I do "cheap" white goods. They pass all the required safety standards, but at a fraction of the price. But you can often (not always) tell the quality difference. Our fridge is a Beko which meets all the standards, but it's falling apart already after 2 years. I realise this doesn't count for every scenario, and I'm not suggesting buying the most expensive either.

When I had my off at Oulton Park, I was wearing an Arai (I forget the model) and was a c.£500 lid. I was knocked out and had dizzy spells for over a month after the accident. Cos/Aim and Wizzbang came up to help me get the Gixxer road worthy again about a month later. We took turns with a pin hammer and lump hammer beating the ruined lid to try and get the shell to crack. We managed it, but the 3 of us looked like we'd just run a marathon.

I'll buy a cheap(er) lid than I have, but I'll be sticking to established brands, even if they aren't the top of the line. My head, in all it's empty glory means alot to me.

Reading this I am conflicted.

My road lids have always been the best I could afford and generally Shoei. Since I took up green laning I have a much cheaper lid cos the speeds are much slower and it just get beaten to death by hedgerows.

That said I do enough road work between lanes that I really should get something better.

I've just thrown a good few hundred notes at an Arai RX7........ and I'm glad I did.

I have an RX7GP that I no longer wear as I have a flip front, but, I wrecked a similar Arai at Oulton Park and I'm eternally grateful at how much money it cost me!
