2005 ZX10r Brake travel

The front brakes on my 10 have always been shit, far too much travel. Tried bleeding etc and nothing seems to make it better.

Any ideas?

Refurb the calipers and put decent braded lines on. If you want to do the job properly, acquire a set of 4 pot radial gold or silver (or blue) spot calipers off a R6 or R1  and get them machined down to suit your disks.

did this to my B1 and they are just brilliant now

what ash said!, or keep your eye out for a cheap set of brembos all depends on how much you want to spend , braided lines will certainly make a difference

Personally I'd buy a master cylinder rebuild kit and do the seals, braided lines and make sure the calipers are overhauled properly.

or get a nissin radial M/C off a later zx10R they make quite a difference. The 04/05 ZX10Rs are known for brakes being a bit under par. See if you can get a set of calipers off the later 2008 onwards bike as they are much better and with the radial M/C do work really well.

Mine were the same and I just put up with it as they stopped, just not spectacularly well
Had braided lines put on and was surprised how little difference it made, but the bike didn't have many miles on at the time
Did all the seals and expected miracles but lever still came back too far
Glad I had done them as they were looking a little old  :)
There seemed to be no reason for the design not to work!
Only thing I could find was, if I put my fingers on a couple of the pads and pulled the lever, I could feel the tiniest bit of movement before it firmed up
I'd always just applied fluid, as in the manuals, when putting it all back together but this time splashed out on a £4 pot of red rubber grease
It was that or £800 worth of Brembo, etc. so...  :embarrassed:
Lots and lots of bleeding, tapping, more bleeding, squeezing fluid out of the banjo joint on the master cylinder (highest point) and more bleeding and "Eureka!"  :grin:
Lever is now like a micro-switch!
Suddenly realised how little I actually use my brakes while out riding  :shocked:
I'd love to know why this should be such an issue if just a bit of lube sorts it - pistons just a little to big, seals a little thick, grooves not wide enough...  :undecided:

The standard master cylinder was shocking on that model, must only get worse with age. I'm surprised anyone still has the standard one fitted as with a bit of spirited braking the lever came back to the bars on both mine and my mates. Replace it with something second hand from a more modern bike or ideally something nice from Brembo, Magura etc.

The standard calipers are not brilliant and plenty of people changed those too but are still good enough with a decent M/C and hoses.

M/C was fine on mine, replacement wouldn't have helped a bit
Bummer as I was quite looking forward to some nice shiny Brembo, just not the bill!  ;)

Are these late model nissin calipers monblocs ?

Nissin M/C off the S1000RR
Nissin Monoblocks off the Daytona 675

Had to take a few mm off the posts and shift to 310mm discs from the later ZX10R. Worth it.

All this talk of radial master cylinders is forcing me to scour the bay and Internet.  For a b1h for example is it a case of just look for any radial mc (within reason ) ie gsxr 750 2007 radial mc all the way to s1000rr jobs like comments pic above?

You'll find that a lot of OEM equipment is the same between brands. I know this M/C has been used by BMW, Kawasaki and Triumph.
