I wouldn't say that the styling was ahead of its time imo I'd just say the 999 styling was wrong

I disagree, the 999 styling was too radical a departure from the 916 too early but looks fantastic and still does today.

I can't see it reaching cult status though...but then again I have been known to talk out of my arse.

Cult status no..... Rarity value maybe..... Decent low miler is worth having

Ok here's my opinion, as it's a forum and it's expected.... But...

Don't you think that these 'modern day classics' have a shelf life??  As in people 'our' age, would willingly pay good money for the old urban tiger blades, 998's, or 98 R1's,and at the moment will hold their value. But, once this generation are too old to want to shell out cash for bikes, the bottom will fall out if that market, and the younger generation will want their nostalgic gsxr1000s or 2016 R1's?

I agree at a point with exception of a few they will just become old bikes....

There's always the danger that the market will stall when borrowing becomes more expensive. I still think that the bikes will be desirable as the bikes we crave now are the ones we hold nostalgia for, but also the ones our dad had..... and a classic will always be a classic.

If you get something which hold cult/cool/classic status now, keep it low mileage and in decent order, it'll never lose value.

Hugh is just looking for something to own which will hold value, or even make a few quid whilst his savings do fook all, so he can't really go wrong with something he will enjoy owning.

Can I just say...... Good topic Shug.

Between this and the early retirement I am really going off you.

Simple answer from me.................if the bikes that might go up in value are what you actually want then fine but if you end up buying something that could be classed as an "investment" but isn't actually the bike you want then I'd say it's missing the point of riding in the first place..............enjoyment.

Risks with any investment...the trick would be to buy cheap just now...store for a future sale...what bike would suit that would be anyones guess...if you had said to anyone years ago an FZ1E would be a great bike to keep as an investment they would have laughed in your face.

Dan, great summary, thanks.

Dom, from what I see on Facebook, you are by far the richest Ninja I know. Your family are awesome.

Gobert, I have bikes to ride and that I want to own and any investment would also be a bike I liked, just not one to use much and make a few quid at the end of ownership. I'd love an SP-2 in my garage or classic BSA/AJS/whatever.

Foo, thanks for your thoughts to food for thought but I see bikes like Slab Sided GSX-R,s going for a reasonable sum so still believe the right modern bike will appreciate. (Hopefully).

I'm not out to make a killing, just enjoy something and maybe beat the bank.

Dom1

You make a valid point, but I'm still going to work on Monday.  ;)
