Excuse the no-doubt stupid question, but what else would I need (monitor, mouse and keyboard I assume) to get this thing up and running and my 12 year old started on learning/programming/creating me an in-car datalogging PC ( one day far into the future )?

Yep all you need is a usb keyboard (and mouse if you want to use the gui)

It has an hdmi port so you can plug it straight into the tv. If you wanted to use a monitor you can get a hdmi -> dvi adapter for pennies on ebay..

Also useful if you want a cheap HD streaming device for your front room. I have a Pi running RaspBMC, streaming full HD video onto the TV, music, pictures etc and it supports DTS audio decoding out of the box.

Have you tried OpenElec?  I prefer it as it boots and runs quicker than Raspbmc.

I did try it but I couldn't see any way of mapping shares? Maybe I didn't give it a good enough go but I couldn't find any option to map a share to my PC where all my media is stored.

I'll take a look when I get home but thought it was in the same place...   You can browse SMB/NFS etc...  Then select if its music/TV/films etc..

I'll take the 2nd starter kit please if it is still available. If you are prepared to bundle it in for another fiver, I will take the 16x2 LCD Pi Plate Kit too. No idea what it is, but I absolutely must need one

If anyone has any good starter books/websites to get my son and I up to speed on these things, please shout. I am clued up enough to add hardware to PCs, and some VB programming, but that is the limit of my knowledge.
