Title: CB750 urban scrambler
Post by: Raydial on December 24, 2013, 08:29:44 PM
Around summer 2012 I started to get interested in the new wave of custom motorcycles. The sort of stuff you see on Bike EXIF. I spent many hours looking at what other people had done. I considered many options. I mulled over buying an old bike and bringing it up to date with tasteful modifications. But I eventually ruled that out because if I had a nice, original, old bike I would feel like it was sacrilege to chop it up or do anything other than a full, original restoration. I bid on one or two part-finished projects on eBay where the sacrilege had already happened but where I could make my own mark on it, making it my own. But I didn't win those.

So I started looking for newer retro-style bikes that would have better performance, braking and handling than the older stuff but still have potential to create something interesting with a definite retro vibe.

So, fast-forward to May 2013. I bought a non-running 1996 CB750 with light accident damage for £600. It had been standing unused in a garage for the best part of a year. I wanted a cheap bike that I could take an angle grinder to and not worry if I fucked something up and this fitted the bill perfectly. My aim is to do something interesting for as little money as possible. So that means I'm not planning to replace things like the exhaust. It's to see what I can do on a budget.

This is it when I got it home.

(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/IMG_2674_zpsde6ad28a.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/IMG_2674_zpsde6ad28a.jpg.html)

I've not really done anything to change its appearance yet, apart from cutting off that rack which was rusted in place and replacing the pink indicators. I jump started it off my flatmate's car battery to get it running and then I replaced the worn-out battery a couple of days later, blowing the main fuse in the process. The terminals in the new battery were the opposite way around to the one I took out. I replaced that, then straightened the fork in the yokes (the previous owner thought they were fucked but they were just twisted), replaced the indicators (two didn't work) and put it through its MOT.

I then replaced a leaking oil feed pipe which was a pain in the arse to do. Even the carbs had to come off. That took me 10 hours.

The brakes were binding a bit so I started overhauling the calipers just before Xmas. When I got the pistons out they were so flaky I decided to replace them too but the company I ordered the new ones from sent me three of the correct type and one wrong one. When the correct replacement arrived it was too late for me to finish the job. So the calipers are currently in my kitchen in London while I'm in Northern Ireland for Christmas.

Anyway, I was bored yesterday (did I mention I'm in Northern Ireland?) so thought I'd do a bit of Photoshopping. This is the before and after of what I would like to do to it. My base bike is scruffier. I intend it to make a feature of that. The tank will be sanded to bare metal and lacquered, keeping the dents visible. The paint is flaky in a few places. I'm thinking of calling her "Tina" because she has a definite patina.

I'm not doing clip-ons because my back won't allow it. I've got some Renthal low bars waiting to go on, that's as low as I dare. I've already got the tail light, I'm planning to chop down and recover the original seat with stretchy, tan vinyl and respray a couple of bits black. I'm still trying to find the perfect rear mudguard but when I get that, I'm ready to start the cosmetics.

Partly, this thread is so that you lot can nag me when I haven't done anything for a while!

Get it done!

Getting rid of the airbox for individual pod filters gives a long way for the look, but at the expense of practicality I imagine.

Yeah, that's something I'd love to do at a later date. It would open up the triangle under the seat. I gather I'd need to increase the jets a couple of sizes to level out the fuelling, and relocate the battery and fuses either to a box in front of the swing arm or to underneath the fuel tank. But it would have to be replaced with a small, lithium one to fit there.

One thing at a time. :)

Well, I've made a start. :)

Stripped off the rear plastics and cut off the rear mudguard, removing the rear light at the same time.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/9E56C83C-B0FC-4E8C-9B63-F1400E837953_zpsxlbaeuww.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/9E56C83C-B0FC-4E8C-9B63-F1400E837953_zpsxlbaeuww.jpg.html)

Got the hacksaw out and cut off some of the subframe. No turning back now...  :icon_pale: Would have liked to take a little more off the length but there's a cross-member there with the seat latch mechanism. So removing that would mean I need another way of keeping the seat on. Also, I would have lost a lot of strength in the subframe.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/4372AE63-3F23-402D-A18C-5F91A1F75E8B_zpsmujetmkv.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/4372AE63-3F23-402D-A18C-5F91A1F75E8B_zpsmujetmkv.jpg.html)

That's about as far as I got. I stuck the seat back on and I reckon it looks better already.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/AED0F3FD-0EE7-4B98-8332-021AF9FFAB8D_zpse1nvpv2a.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/AED0F3FD-0EE7-4B98-8332-021AF9FFAB8D_zpse1nvpv2a.jpg.html)
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/1388CAEA-25CA-44B2-A8BB-6FFD149F0783_zpspoeu9tqm.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/1388CAEA-25CA-44B2-A8BB-6FFD149F0783_zpspoeu9tqm.jpg.html)

The subframe has surface rust in quite a few places so I'll have to wire brush that off and spray it. I have some lugs to remove while I'm at it. And it could do with a wash.  :embarrassed:

I offered the new mudguard up to it to see how it looked. I need to trim back more of the undertray plastic so I can get it in a better position, fix it in place, see where I can squeeze in the relocated electrics and hook up the new rear light and indicators (not sure where the indicators will go yet) and shove on the numberplate to get it legal again.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/8674AB51-C8D8-45EE-B8F7-C8BEA827AA35_zpsikz7b1gw.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/8674AB51-C8D8-45EE-B8F7-C8BEA827AA35_zpsikz7b1gw.jpg.html)

Then I'll shorten, reshape and recover the seat. I'm thinking of shortening the subframe further and putting on a rear loop, like this.
(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/CAFE-RACER-SEAT-FRAME-LOOP-TUBE-HONDA-CB500-CB550-CB750-XS750-XS850-GS550-/00/s/NzIwWDk2MA==/z/ncAAAOxyA4ZRJ-~Z/$(KGrHqZHJEcFEihKVW0oBRJ-+ZRzC!~~60_12.JPG) (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAFE-RACER-SEAT-FRAME-LOOP-TUBE-HONDA-CB500-CB550-CB750-XS750-XS850-GS550-/181330741613?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item2a3827896d)

I think it's going to be an evolutionary process as I try different things a bit at a time and see what I like.

Oh, and I already got the brake calipers reconditioned and stuck on some braided hoses.

Very liberating that you can just evolve the bike rather than have a set agenda...the biggest part being that you enjoy the process.  ;)  :moto:

How about making a hugger, and putting the number plate on one side of the swingarm?
The bobbed look is good but I think I'd get fed up of a wet arse on anything but bone dry roads.

I can't stand the one-sided number plate thing. It looks like the person who built the bike couldn't figure out how to attach a numberplate and just stuck it wherever they could. I'd rather put it on a GS1200 spray guard.

I like the look of bobbers when they're stationary but think folk look like twats riding them. But maybe it's just the hipsters I've seen on them in East London that put me off.

Was just wheeling it back to the bike bay and forgot the sidestand was down when dropping the front wheel off the kerb. So it pitched the bike off to the side. The side that was away from me. Bike went over and I landed on top of it, bashing the side of my jaw off a bollard in the process. Embarrassing!  :icon_blackeye:

No damage to the bike, by the way.

Get some round indicators and put them in the holes in the subframe where you've sawn it off.
Title: Re: CB750 brat
Post by: Raydial on February 24, 2014, 12:18:05 PM
Yeah, I'd been thinking about that already. Not sure. It would solve a couple of problems - where to put the indicators and what to do with the open ends of the subframe. But I think I prefer more traditional sticky-out indicators and a rear hoop. But if I go for a rear hoop, I'm going to have to build a custom seat rather than adapting the existing one...

Looking good Ray, been watching this thread. Love things like this, bit of tinkering and the like.

With regards to the muppet moment, I did the same last year with the MV...... changing the oil, you have to flip the sidestand up to get at the sump bolt.

20 minutes later I had forgotten it wasnt down when I took it off the paddock stand.... I had the foresight to take the fairings off though.

So yesterday, after getting the loop fitted, I filed down the weld, and ground and filed off some other lugs to tidy it all up. Then I sprayed it.

I gave it another coat of frame paint today and fitted the mudguard. I fabricated the brackets for it out of a pair of ice tongs from the pound shop.  :laughing7:

Then it started raining...  :(

(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/9BF650BD-E29E-49C6-A9E0-8BA4824275F7_zpseppnjz8y.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/9BF650BD-E29E-49C6-A9E0-8BA4824275F7_zpseppnjz8y.jpg.html)

The mudguard doesn't look straight in this picture. I'll have to take a look at that to see if it's actually squint or if it's just a trick of the light. I thought it was straight when I fitted it.

(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/34C9309A-3794-4BC2-99AE-6594E8DB7A80_zpslxafyazz.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/34C9309A-3794-4BC2-99AE-6594E8DB7A80_zpslxafyazz.jpg.html)

I think I might have enough room above the mudguard for a shallow tray for the electrics.  :dontknow:

And I remembered to lift the side stand when wheeling it back to the parking bay this time!

Don't they? That bike's gorgeous! I'd love to.

Classified Moto do a triple tree conversion but it's a bit pricey for me at $485 plus shipping. At least for now. Further down the line I might do it. I don't have the technical know-how to do it myself.
http://classifiedmoto.bigcartel.com/product/classified-moto-triple-tree-swap

Otherwise, I have some Renthal low bars waiting to go on, with brown gum grips. I'll get smaller mirrors, maybe bar-end mounted. And I'm planning to put on a speedo headlight (http://www.benjiescaferacer.com/headlight-bucket.php).

I'm thinking of going for this speedo/tacho (http://www.acewell.co.uk/Acewell%20Speedometers/ACE-2xxx/ACE-2856.htm?action=full&id=18). It's not the prettiest but the headlight bucket only has space for one dial and I don't want to give up a rev counter.

A couple of weeks ago, I made the base for the seat and added the rear light that you can see in the photo above and a number plate hanger. This was it before I added the second bracket and glued the various bits together.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/F704E071-4F0C-40C1-AB00-FF3E12644BE0_zps7eykiwv3.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/F704E071-4F0C-40C1-AB00-FF3E12644BE0_zps7eykiwv3.jpg.html)

Today, I added the indicators.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/A0540ABB-4268-4057-9ECD-E56CE455850E_zpsjcilsgob.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/A0540ABB-4268-4057-9ECD-E56CE455850E_zpsjcilsgob.jpg.html)

And then I added the foam to the seat base. It was looking a lot thicker than I expected.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/2A89BE5F-D8D2-47E7-8A9C-C39F680AFB33_zpsuwkprjni.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/2A89BE5F-D8D2-47E7-8A9C-C39F680AFB33_zpsuwkprjni.jpg.html)

The next step, of course, was to cover the seat and then add the number plate. I'm using the original seat latch to secure the seat in place at the back. So I can reach behind an indicator, pull the latch and get easy access to the fuses under the seat. I went slightly smaller than standard with the number plate. Hopefully, I won't get any hassle for it. With the slimmed down rear end even 8" x 6" looks big.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/CD676C3A-CC40-4041-BD4C-1E8FF95A55AD_zpshq7c5ns5.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/CD676C3A-CC40-4041-BD4C-1E8FF95A55AD_zpshq7c5ns5.jpg.html)

I'm not happy with the seat. There's too much of a gap between the seat and the tank, the foam's too soft and it's too tall, although I'm getting used to the height a bit. I'll contact a couple of pro seat builders to see what they can do, and for how much.

Then I gave her a wash just to please Alzo.  ;)

I took her out for a short shake-down run and it all seems to be good for tomorrow's Boxhill rideout. She looks a bit Mad Max-esque from this angle.
(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/0E4E2AE5-A19A-451A-9375-2FBF66BC9B91_zpscbmeovkb.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/0E4E2AE5-A19A-451A-9375-2FBF66BC9B91_zpscbmeovkb.jpg.html)

I didn't put the side pods back on because they wouldn't look right with this seat, I think. And one of them needs a repair. I might put oval number boards on until I get pod filters.

Speaking of filters, I replaced the air filter and there was some oil in the airbox. So that, along with smoky running at high revs makes me think the piston rings are shot. Ah, well. A rebuild may be on the cards...   :undecided:

I am super excited about how your bike is going to turn out! I have the exact same CB750 here in Australia and am just starting work on it. Items are hard to find so I think I'll be getting some stuff from the UK. I'll have to show you the work. Did you rebuild you brakes yourself or get someone else to do it?
Title: Re: CB750 brat
Post by: Raydial on April 06, 2014, 09:07:39 AM
Yeah, it'd be great to see what you do with yours. Why don't you start a thread here? :)

I started doing the calipers myself then I got stuck. Or to be more specific, a couple of pistons got stuck because it seems I didn't have the fluid seal grooves absolutely, 100% spotless and the new seals got pinched when I put the pistons back in. So I sent them to a company in North England called Powerhouse Automotive.

Really good. There were lots of cool bikes. My favourite was this 1955 Matchless with a 2001 KTM520 engine in it. It was almost all built from bits bought on eBay. Old school looks but with a fast engine and decent brakes!  :moto: Wouldn't be much use in the twisties, though!

I also spoke with deBolex about a triple tree conversion. They've done that to the same model of CB750 as mine. I'd need to buy an R1 front end. Or I could use the R6 which is slightly shorter. Something to consider...

I spoke with my mechanic today. The engine is still with the builders who are taking their time with it. They had to build a special jig to get the barrels out. I'm worrying how much that's going to cost me!

The engine should come back next week, then the frame guys will bolt the block in, jig it up, and cut out and replace the rusted bit behind the oil cooler. Then it'll go to the powder coaters...

I went out to see the guys at Hertfordshire Superbikes today. There's progress although they still couldn't get the barrels off the crank case. They're sourcing replacement barrels cos it's got to the big hammer stage now. So the engine's still not had anything done to it (the place that was meant to be doing the engine work had it for a month and a half before giving up).

They've replaced the frame's rusted-through cross member. It was behind the oil cooler. The frame's ready to go off for powder coating now so I picked the colour I want.

(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/6DCD8F64-81A2-4DC7-AD0D-6F86878CF241_zpsdw8p3qho.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/6DCD8F64-81A2-4DC7-AD0D-6F86878CF241_zpsdw8p3qho.jpg.html)

They've also sanded back the tank as requested. There are some bits where they couldn't get it all off so it'll get bead blasted this week. Then José will clearcoat it along with the alloy front mudguard I bought (which I need to take along to them next weekend).

To be fair to Hertfordshire Superbikes, they were hamstrung by the engine place that held onto the engine for so long. The frame guy wouldn't replace the cross member without the engine in place in case it ended up springing out of shape when he removed the bad bit. Progress should be quicker now and they've got another engine place lined up to do the rebuild. They've got less work on, apparently.

I might be able to give you a bit of an update on Friday.

I can say, though, that I had to order a new swing arm from Japan cos when mine was bead blasted it was too badly rusted to use. It had more holes than Swiss cheese. The new one won't arrive till the middle of November. So there's no rush for the other work to be done.  :undecided:

Coxy, I should have my bolt on's done over the weekend so will post up after they are all done.

I'm trying hard to get prices from Norman Hyde for some performance upgrades but they are slow at responding.

Hax was very kind in transporting back an awesome leather seat, Pazzo's, chrome low profile mirrors and a new set of shocks from British Customs in the States which I ordered and had delivered to his hotel and he took them back in his Business Class luggage, saving import duty.

I've had to modify the front brake reservior mount to fit the mirrors and British Customs have been really helpful and interested in how I did this.

Original items when this is finished:
Most of the frame
Crank case
Fuel tank
Yokes and fork lowers
Wheels
Loom/electrics
Carbs/airbox
Brake calipers

Expensive to replace though on top of an already mounting bill.

I wanted a cheap bike that I could take an angle grinder to and not worry if I fucked something up and this fitted the bill perfectly. My aim is to do something interesting for as little money as possible. So that means I'm not planning to replace things like the exhaust. It's to see what I can do on a budget.

you still going with the worn/distressed look ray?
or has that changed now you are getting lots of nice shiny bits
The tank will be pretty-much as you see it. Most other bits will be shiny and new.

That's a temporary one until the Japanese one arrives. It has the wrong set up for the rear brake but it lets the garage turn it into a rolling chassis.

I didn't like the way they'd welded plates onto the existing headlight bracket. It was rough, bulky-looking and ugly. So I bought a new one for £26 delivered and I think it looks much better now.

I spoke to them at the end of last week. They said they were aiming to get it off the ramp this week. I might go out to see it tomorrow.

The headlight's from Carpy's Cafe Racers in the US.

At first glance, it doesn't look a lot different but it's slowly getting there. The engine's complete, the clutch is replaced, the resprayed oil cooler and new hoses are on, the loom is mostly reinstalled, the new swing arm is on, the brakes are attached properly, the switch gear is there, the carbs have been overhauled and are waiting to go on etc. (http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/IMG_20141213_115851_zpshemctxfo.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/IMG_20141213_115851_zpshemctxfo.jpg.html)

Hehe... It's hard to tell at the minute cos the final bits will make or break the look. The tank and front mudguard still need to have the right ground/brushed look, and the seat will be a fundamental part of its final appearance. The side panels will be important too.

Bollocks to whether you can see the clocks or not, this is aesthetics not ergonomics....

Knew the front did not look in tune with the rest and agree with this.

Otherwise, looks awesome. Well done.

Nearly there!

I did the final cosmetic touch today, adding the numbers to the side panels.

(http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj177/Raydial/CB750%20Project/9E626AC9-7006-4644-9CEE-077421D0923B_zpsw8hlct4m.jpg) (http://s272.photobucket.com/user/Raydial/media/CB750%20Project/9E626AC9-7006-4644-9CEE-077421D0923B_zpsw8hlct4m.jpg.html)

All that remains to be done is sorting out an electrical cut out issue (although there isn't a side stand switch, apparently), turning the right twist grip a bit so the throttle cable doesn't rub the tank on full lock, then a shake-down run to surface any final niggles. Next weekend, it'll be in my possession. I'm as excited as a kid waiting for Christmas!

I'm really happy with the way it's turned out (although I think I'll lower the headlight slightly further and maybe find slightly shorter headlight brackets). It was very hard walking away to get the train back into London. :undecided: But next weekend I'm riding it home.

Cheers, Allan. Looking forward to April!

Which brackets? I couldn't use the original ones cos the new speedo headlight bucket is longer and the ignition barrel would be in the way.

I'm thinking of seeing if I can relocate the ignition barrel at some point but that could be impractical.

Excellent.  Shoreditch coffee shops will stop in their tracks :)

If I was nitpicking I'd say the headlight/clocks combo is going to be awkward because of the shape.  I'd be inclined to get a shorter headlight and separate clocks.

Still looks fantastic and I has the jealous.....

Cheers, DW. Yeah, that bit's tricky but I like how it tidies up the handlebars and it's not commonplace. If I can tighten up the gaps, getting the lens closer to the fork, then it'll look better-proportioned.

Nice one Saint Ray. I too prefer the black brackets for the headlight. I would also prefer a shallower headlight, and the front mudguard to be closer to the tyre. But if we all liked the same things it would be a boring world. Hope to see it in the metal in April.  :moto: :moto:

Could the shop that built it not modify the headlamp brackets?  Looks to me like you'd only need to shorten the arms by an inch or so?
Title: Re: CB750 brat
Post by: Raydial on March 08, 2015, 09:54:55 PM
Lowering the headlight might give enough room to tuck it in nicely. There's a bit of a gap there already. But then the ignition barrel might obscure the speedo. I'll have a look at that with them on Saturday although I could just do that myself. But to be honest, I'm just desperate to ride the bloody thing!
