Title: Track bike
Post by: Lord Danoir the first on November 20, 2018, 08:55:20 AM
So I've returned from Cartegena completely hooked on track days again, so much so that I've booked it again in March.

I was the only chap there with a road bike and not running warmers and it did make the first couple of laps slightly uncomfortable........ especially a near monumental highside, saved only by my hefty weight the one time I tried to push after only a lap.......... had I been more the size of Gilby, I'd still be in fucking orbit.......

Aaaaaaanyway, Anna casually mooted the idea of a track bike, so obviously I'm now all over that shit........ typically, with my grandiose pallet, heart leads head on all matters and I'm directed towards the more exotic and perhaps more fragile rather than something more 'meat and potato'......

With a budget of around 7K (tight bitch) I've identified two possibilities; which Dicko thinks I'm insane to consider......... as always, my response: "be reet"...... as a partnership, those words have served us well for nearly 18 years, so I've no compulsion to abandon them now.

Seriously though kids..... will it be reet?

My RC8 performed impeccably so I'm very tempted to go down this route.

MV's just look so lovely though

another vote for the RC8, i assume there are no noise tests at these european track days?
not sure i would trust an MV as a trackbike.

RC8 all day for me.

Is that a 2012 R model with the lighter wheels etc?

To be honest if you think you will be doing loads of days the best option (but not the prettiest) would be a GSXR or ZX10R, but you already knew that didn't you  ;)

Not loads of days, say 3-4 euro events a year. I may even keep it out in Spain as there's plenty of tracks to go at.

Sorry didn't know the budget when I put my suggestions forward.

The F3 675 looks amazing.

The Daytona is the only bike I can think of that would pull me away from a Japanese IL4 bike for trackdays. My criteria would be that I wanted solid everything and cheap to service and repair.... but that's really doesn't fit your criteria!

FYI - my size really works for me when you twin it with a lack of talent and a large helping of fear.... keeps you well away from the throttle in these moments!  :moto:

neither did I...... it certainly met the criteria...... then I decided to get creative..... bottle of Rioja, dusted off the mankini and a dibby dab of the old Brut.... bit of Barry White....

Sorry. I meant to say 2010. In which case, it's the best RC8 made yet. Deffo go for it.

A few mates were on that trip to cartegana and 2 of the. Crashed, but anyway..

I've had both RC8 and MV all be it the 800 F3 I much preferred the MV on track but didn't even keep it a year as I got so pissed off with it's problems. It always ran but I could never get use of all the gears. A long story but basically it was an internal problem that the dealer and MV did not want to deal with. When I traded it in I took a massive hit as anyone but an MV dealer just outright said they didn't want it. I got so frustrated with the whole affair that I'll never buy Italian again.
If you only looking at the 675 version then I'd go for a Triumph D675.

An MV will shit itself if it's used as a trackbike.
Screw having something exotic.  Buy something Japanese and all you need to do is feed it petrol and tyres.

Another reason I got rid. I personally saw 2 bikes blow standard engines, one of which hadn't even done 2k miles

ooh some lovely looking bikes you have in mind, I do love a euro track day trip, EPIC they are  :afro:

Id suggest getting a BMW S1000rr or Gen 4 ZX10r with all the electronic trickery and Gizmos I reckon you would pick one up well within budget. My mates recently got a Gen 4 ZX10r and apart from the shocking colour scheme it wants for nothing.

My old gen 3 (Lacks all the gizmos and latest electronics) holds its own, and you can pick similar IL4`s up for around the 4K 5K mark. Thatll give you spare cash for trackday trips, tyres or upgrades when fettling.

Just a thought

Thing is though, a track bike is an appliance rather than joy of ownership.
Unless you want to go to the trouble of turning something improbable into a track bike (remember my ZRX?) or get something like a Harris framed XR/GS1000 thing?

Nothing wrong with having a nice bike that you happen to ride on track days.
I just thought you were talking about a track bitch you could ride hard and put away wet

Corner speed so much more skilful than straight line speed.

OK can everybody just stop being so bally sensible?

Nothing decided yet other than (thanks to you cretinous knuckleheads): an MV is unlikely...... but that may change...... any time now.

Keep circling back to an RC8R though as I got on with my stock RC8 so well at Cartegena, so that's looking favourite.

Offer accepted on a Spanish Villa and since we viewed last week, the pound has shat enough to cost us around 3-4K so currently track bike budget is in flux.

Rc8r sounds like a great halfway house. Unusual enough to feel special without being so rare it's a liability.

Am now wondering if I'm defeating my own objective...... getting something I like so much I'm  scared of damaging it.....

I wouldn't worry about that.  People with the 'doesn't matter if I crash it' attitude to track days can fuck right off and keep out of my way.  Mainly because I don't want to upset the track staff having to discover their corpse in a half empty oil drum behind the paddock....

There are a few really sorted looking ZX10's for around and slightly above my budget. If I had the spare cash now I'd give this a serious looky loo:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawasaki-ZX10R-Race-Track-Bike/183539195771?hash=item2abbc9df7b:g:dpcAAOSwHOZb7tlo

Hopefully in the new year I'll be able to sort something. I don't want to use my KTM again.

Slight hijack....but are the RC8R's that good? I thought they were down on power and had lower speed fueling issues?
Title: Re: Track bike
Post by: MOzZereLLa on November 26, 2018, 09:57:00 PM
How much power do you want? I think my RC8R was about 150-160 BHP but the handling and ergonomics more than made up for it.

I fitted mine with the Akky super stock twin pipe full system and had the Power Commander and quickshifter fitted and it was sublime. Sorted the fuelling perfectly.

I traded it for the 2012 S1000RR and wished I hadn't. The Beemer was a soulless missile.

If I could afford one I'd have another 2010 R model in a heartbeat

Well, cash reserves pretty much depleted to zero following an eye watering deposit sent to a Spanish lawyer......... hopefully things don't go tits up our end or we lose it........ mind you, if the vendor pulls the plug, they owe us 3x the amount.

I may end up selling a bike to fund a track bike...... no hardship but it'll certainly have to wait until the new year

Seriously........ had I transferred the 30% + fees + deposit that I've had to raise in the UK when we first had our offer accepted, it would have saved me EXACTLY the cost of that bike, thanks to Theresa's little stunt yesterday.
