Bike Talk / Re: Old bikers.....................

I'm 58 and not been without a bike since I turned 16, which seems like yesterday.  I've been averaging 23,000 miles a year for the last ten or twelve years just commuting, and I don't see me giving up riding in the near future, every day is different.

My first big bike at 17 was a 1970 Norton 750 Fastback, whistling pipes and a tls front brake.  It was a great bike ruined by silly problems that should have been factory-sorted, like the solid external oil lines that fractured, dumping a gallon of Duckhams Q over my rear tyre, the silly points ignition with the innards that fracture, bit of a theme here ..... vibration.  A set of the Mark 3 isolastic mounts, a flexible oil line, and electric ignition and it was a fine bike.

Another one I should have kept, sob.

The green one is lovely, it must have taken a lot of skill and effort to make it look that simple.

Another potentially good bike ruined by poor fuelling.

Wasn't there an article in one of the mags about someone buying one and touring north Africa?

I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be the sidestand switch, it had worn out along the printed circuit.

I always pre-fill the filter, it seems a simple job that helps the oil pressure build quickly when you start it after the oil change.

It looks a bit unfinished, like a side panel is missing and the tail light came off something else.

Wayne Gardner at Olivers Mount (according to the Internet page I found) with Bob Smith in the background, it does look like his lid.

Selling my Mk1 Le Mans is one of the few regrets I've had over the years, it had been built for the TT, 1000cc big bore, 40mm Dell Orto's with accelerator pumps, deep sump and Dunlop KR124 front and Endurance rear "not for road use tyres", but it was never raced.  I sold it to Eddie Roberts when he had his shop in Birkenhead.

I had a couple of 350 LCs when they came out, one with the Pro Am fairing kit, imitation clipon bars with the clock protectors, and chrome Allspeed spannies, it was a lot of fun, odd handling and poor brakes.  The other was in Kenny Roberts yellow.

That was over thirty-odd years ago, I feel old :-(

Bike Talk / Re: Bridgestone BT021

Oem tyres are always poor.  I use BT023s on the 636 and they are great, I fitted S20s to my Z1000 and they feel wooden and lifeless.  I've had BT010, 020, 014, 016, 021 and 023 over the years so it's a shame I've got to move to another company for my next change.  I did have Dunlop Qualifier II RR on my ZX10R and they were brilliant for road use, grip and wear, so I'll probably go for Roadsmart or Sportsmart next.

I found handlebar muffs to be great for keeping your gloves dry, but didn't seem any warmer, the wind blows through the gap at the handlebars.  I've just fitted R&G heated grips, I should have done it years ago.

The Z1000 looks a poor update, styled after the latest Hondas, it's lost the balance of it's looks by removing the fork covers off the Gen 3 version.  The frame and engine look the same as the current model, so it's really just a new set of clothes, and the worst tacho I've ever come across.

They are different part numbers, but that might just be a colour difference, not necessarily a physical difference.

I used the oem cables, but had to snip the two lock nuts off the adjusters in the middle of the cable.  Inside the throttle housing there's ridge, that fouls the tube when the insert is added, it just needs shaving down a bit.
