If I had the budget for 'special', I'd be looking at a proper classic (i.e. 1960s or older) and/or one of those funky new wave custom whatnots that seem to be what the cool kids are doing these days.

personally speaking my dream garage of affordable modern classic sportsbikes would be:

98 R1 in red and white
ZXR750R (i owned one of these, and i loved it but it was far from a mint example!)
VFR400 (only because an RC30 is too much money!)
916 (preferably an SPS but they probably dont fall into the 'affordable' category anymore!)
MVF4
SP2 in edwards castrol rep colours (got an sp1, again far from mint!)

and whilst it might not be considered a modern classic by many I'd have to have a  04 ZX10R as it was new out when i passed my test and was the ultimate hooligan sportsbike and i WANTED ONE BAD!

Riding my mates 92 Blade, having ridden a 916SP and all the things I've heard about the RC30 I believe that statement to be bollocks.

I wouldn't mind a go on RC30 just to see if they live up to the hype but I just don't get on with 916's - one of my mates had a 916 then a 916sp and then a 996r (which was the first Ducati to use their 998 engine) which I rode quite a bit and disliked but as I said, that might just be me....
