Looking at options for some sort of bike mounted navigation equipment and wondered what you lovely people use.

I need something rugged, waterproof and capable of some decent off road mapping.

I am seeing references to Memorymap, Viewranger and GPX files/overlays but I have no idea what that means in terms of kit.

Budget is tight as usual.

Am I better off getting some sort of app on a smart phone and a decent mount/case?

So far I have bought a second hand OS map and a compass, ol' skool aiiii.

Motorbike or push bike? If pushbike Garmin tour plus is good, motorbike for off road not sure but Memory Map can be installed on Phones tablets etc but the maps are quite expensive (though purchase allows use on 5 devices apparently).

OS map app on the pie phone with a lifeproof case?

OS locate app - FOC - give you a compass overlay on the camera
OS mapfinder app - FOC (but pay for the maps you want as an in app purchase @ £10 each for the 1:50,000 land ranger maps or £1.99 for the smaller tiles of 1:25,000 Explorer maps. You'll need 15 or so tiles to cover rinwood-salisbury plain though)
you can then plan and record trails to the app.

Sounds good, being able to plot a route to follow at home before setting out would be useful.

Just spoke to the bloke I am buying the bike from an due recommends Satmap Active 10.

Looking on EBay they are starting around £150 so it will have to wait till I have paid off the bike or sold the track bike, holding off on that until I know if this green laning is for me.

I got the viewranger app for the iPhone. Works pretty well, easy to use etc. I haven't used it much for navigating on the bike, just to double check location a few times.

Sort of on topic... anyone got a recommendation for a decent case for mounting an iPhone on the bike?

Dom - I have a Garmin eTrex 20 battery operated GPS device (fantastic as you can easily carry spare AAs when out in the wilds), you're welcome to borrow it if you like. I don't use it anymore and was thinking of selling it anyway (£90 cash to anyone interested!)

Cheers, looks like it does GPX maps.

What maps does it come with? Do they show the byways open to all traffic and roads used as public paths?
