I've seen people do it and always wondered why?

You've got to get off the bike anyway, and the last thing you want is petrol all over your bollocks.......... well, maybe not the LAST thing

komp

why do you need to get off it?
you can pay at the pump now

It's something I've always done; just seems less of a faff to fill it up while sitting on it, and the tank is level.

Got the pump disabled after refusing to get off the bike this morning when I was filling it; was pay at pump and is normally hassle free (no lid off requests) but was told that it was legislation that you had to get off the bike to fill it.

I always found it easier to fill up sitting on the bike too.
Legislation my arse.  It's just that 'Oh look motorbike, must want to steal petrol' reaction.  Completely baffling if it's a pay-at-the-pump too!
Same with making you take your helmet off (even though I always do anyway otherwise I can't hear a word people are saying).

The PELG guide says you"should" dismount not that you have to.

I always sit on mine. Never had an issue.
Significantly faster than you.....

Yup, did try that tack when I was speaking to them, but the record was stuck on legislation.

It also only says that they can request, but nothing about what to do if they don't.

On a side note, from the links, seems that Kawasaki and Suzuki don't need to ;-)

Well...... if you were the sort of person who carried out risk assessments, then it's not unreasonable to suggest that fueling a bike whilst sat on it carries an increased and unnecessary risk.

I can see it from both sides. Just like wearing helmets: I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with someone entering my premises wearing a helmet.

As much as you think these people are being anti bike...... there's half a chance you're being over sensitive and should just do as you're bloody told.

innit

Should all passengers get out of a car then when you refuel it?

Petrol can go bang!

Always sat on the bike to fill up now. Just seems easier and less of a faff. Have had a couple of occasions when people have told me to get off the bike and had various reasons cited. The only real reason you get told to get off the bike is gobshite attendants that like telling people what to do when they are in a bad mood!

Frustratingly, I've had a few occasions in Manc where they try and make you pre-pay for fuel (on bikes only) because of all the scrotes that steal from them. The problem is that the stations aren't set up for pre-paying and you have to guess how much fuel you want. My answer of "a full tank" and a quick game of "I don't know mate, how many litres do you think it will hold?" normally causes enough confusion that I'm allowed to just go back and fill up my tank like a normal trusted member of society again.

as with everything else, it's the few that end up causing grief for the masses!

Fair argument, but if there is a spark and you're sat on the bike, you're more likely to drench yourself and I don't think there's much chance you'd get away..... you've half a chance if you're stood by the bike, or if you're in a car and can jump out.

Seems to make sense to me.

Haven't had this one yet, can't see any difference risk wise if I'm on or off the bike tbh. They don't make all passengers get out of cars when they are filled up and I don't have a seatbelt or door to get in my way!

I try my best to avoid buying fuel from places that make me take my lid off.
