I found some enthusiasm today and went about the task of trying to fit up the tailend of the Arrows system.  Fell at the first hurdle though, it simply won't fit with the standard sized battery in place.  Spent quite a while trying to make it fit, but it's not having it, so I think the best bet is to take the bike to someone like MHP and have a custom link pipe made, and then a new can to fit, a job to do after finishing the trackdays for the year methinks.


Whilst I had the tools out, I made a good job of tidying the extra wiring that came with HM quickshifter, in fact, I tidied all the tail end wiring up and routed it neatly.


Done a few other little bits and pieces that needed doing, changed the 41 tooth rear sprocket to a 43 as I felt the bike seemed a bit flat coming out of the corners, then stuck the fairings back on.


As it stands, it again is ready for the next trackday.

Rode the bike yesterday at a dry Brands Indy, quickshifter is a real joy to use and the slipper is a good safety net.


The bike just gets better the more I ride it and it ran perfect for all sessions without the need for any tinkering.


The only real issue now to sort is what appears to be the starter motor giving up, it's a bit intermittant, so once the last TD for the year is over on Sunday I shall have a proper investigation.

The bike is heading to MHP on Saturday to have a new (quieter) can and link pipe made up, no more stuffing the baffle full of wire wool just to get through 102db days.

Nah, should be similar in terms of performance to the Leo Vince, so shouldn't really affect the fueling

Finally got to the the bottom of the starter issues, it turned out to be the starter relay.

Got a new pattern part off eBay for £15 and it's all fixed and working on the button again.


Spent a few hours at MHP Exhausts yesterday....went with the intention of getting a new can and fitting, but things weren't quite straight forward.

Long story short, Mark at MHP didn't think it was the can that was causing the noise issues, and in the end he proved himself right.  He is a top bloke who really knows his job and is not a rip off merchant either.  He ended up concluding that I didn't need a new can, so he wouldn't sell it to me.

The problem really lies with the kit Arrows system that I have, something to do with resonance frequencies around 7k rpm (noise testing range) which really drive the sound pressure higher.  After repacking my Leo Vince can the level dipped only slightly, Mark then tried the can he had put aside for me, and that was no different, so back to my can and making all sorts of front end baffle arrangements (It really is amazing to watch a true craftsman at work), but ultimately nothing really showed any notable improvement.

We agreed that it wasn't really worth the expense of persuing further by modifing the Arrows system pipes, so the simplest remedy was to fabricate an MHP adjustable baffle for my can, which dropped the readings by c.5db in the middle of it's adjustment range.  The downside to this will be a potential power drop somewhere, but it's all about the noise level, as if it's too loud I won't be on track to find out about power loss. 

I still have the option of going back to the standard headers and using the Leo Vince can (how it used to be) if I still have too many noise issues.  I will be trying out the new baffle with my sound meter within the next week or two, and find out just what I'm faced with.

Managed to get my sound meter back and nip out and do some sound testing....

This is for the kit Arrows system and the Leo Vince SBK can (which MHP repacked), I tried the can without any baffle, with the Leo Vince baffle, and then with the MHP baffle in different stages of it's adjustment range.

This is the MHP baffle



I warmed the bike up a bit first, until it showed about 60'c and then the results are as follows

No baffle - 104.7
LV baffle - 101.0
MHP baffle (closed) - 95.8
MHP baffle (open) - 97.4
MHP baffle (end off) - 97.6

Each test was carried out to ACU guidlines (45' 500mm @ 7000 rpm) and the results are the average of 3 tests back to back.

After all the tests, I retested the can without any baffle

No baffle - 102.8




That should see me pass any noise testing that I come up against, although I have no idea what kind of power loss is to be expected with the new baffle.

Having the bike warmed up well makes a huge difference. My b1 when cold is 104dBa, when warm is 102dBa and when properly hot, high 70s on the gauge, is 100-101dBa. That's with no baffle at all. I'm gonna ram some new packing in it and see if I can't get it down to 98dBa so I can get on quiet days.

Time to update again.......


Noise is now not an issue, have done 3 trackdays recently, two with the LV baffle and one without.  When hot I got tested with the baffle at 98db both times, so next time I will try without and see if I can get inside 102db.  The noisy day I was tested without the baffle, but the tester thought the bike was a thou so he only asked for 5.5k revs to test at...wasn't going to argue.


As far as the rest of the bike goes, well, it's not quite such a good story right now.  2 silly offs have taken their toll on the left side of the bike.


It's not too bad really, but it's certainly not gleaming anymore :(




Clip on clamp broke, but the bar is perfect (how did that happen ?).



Seat unit was the worst hit and needs a big repair or replacing.



Footpeg snapped off and the mounting plate is bent too.



Carbon generator cover did it's job well, and has saved the casing underneath from being worn away.  I have run the bike for a while today and the case is not weeping at all, so all is ok there.





The worst thing (from my perpsective) is the swingarm took a hit, and the bobbin has been ripped out of the mounting, the mount is still intact, although deformed and still has half the bobbin bolt stuck inside.  The sharkfin has also vanished into thin air too.
